He stars opposite Robert Redford in his new movie A Walk In The Woods, which is based on Bill Bryson's best-selling nonfiction book.

The film did better than expected at the box office, debuting in third place on its opening weekend, despite mixed reviews from critics.

In the movie Nolte plays Stephen Katz, an old friend of Bill Bryson (Redford) who hikes the Appalachian Trail with him, despite being a recovering alcoholic and out of shape.

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy, Nick revealed just how much of a physical strain the shoot put on his body.

'You end up doing a lot because they’re never satisfied with one take. We’d walk uphill and then we’d do it five, six times to get it right. Sometimes we would be shooting … we’d come upon a vista, or see a valley … they’d be shooting us when the background was full of woods and we never saw the vista.'

'We walked a lot. I replaced my hip right afterwards. I’ve got a fake knee and a fake hip. I’m becoming bionic. It took a long time for them to get the knees down, and I had no cartilege left, from sports and stuff, so it was a really miracle operation.'
