Confirmed UFO sighting or just a drone? Researchers still unable to identify mysterious flying object that was filmed over New York in April

  • A man filmed a flying object in April in Port Jefferson on New York's Long Island
  • He submitted what he saw to the Mutual UFO Network for investigation and researchers have been unable to determine what he saw
  • Some believe it could be a drone passed on the way it was flying level as if it were being controlled by a human, but cannot be certain
  • Researchers also say they cannot determine the range at which the object was filmed

Researchers are still struggling to explain a flying object filmed off the coast of Long Island.

An unidentified man filmed the boomerang-shaped vessel as it zipped across the sky in April, brightly lit at around 10:30pm in Port Jefferson.

He then submitted the video to the Mutual UFO Network for investigation, and has left almost everyone stumped as to what he captured on his phone.

'When I looked to my left, I noticed red and blue lights hovering. I stopped and watched for a little bit to see if it was just someone playing with a toy,' the witness wrote in his report according to The Huffington Post.

'Then the object went higher into the air and started to move pretty fast. I then took out my phone and started to record for as long as I could till my phone died.'

Some of the researchers believe what he may have seen was just a drone, but cannot be certain as they cannot get a good idea of how close the object was to where the man was filming.

'I looked at the video and found there is no reliable way to determine the object's range. This presents us with a problem in determining the nature of the object,' said Marc Dantonio. the chief photo and video analyst for the UFO Network .

'That said, it could be a small object up close, which would put this as a small radio controlled drone or plane. We can't ignore this possibility.'

Joseph Flammer, the UFO Network field investigator for New York, also points out there are numerous airports near the area though this object is clearly not a plane.

Supporting Dantonio's drone theory he said is the fact that the object appears to fly level, which is 'typical of a person flying a craft at night.'

He then adds however; 'That's not to say it isn't a true unknown - I am just saying that it is explainable in human terms.'

A recent study found that many people who claim to see UFOs in the United States spot them in the summer months, with residents in Maine, Washington, Arizona and Nevada making the most reports.

Sightings in New York City and Long Island are particularly rare given the massive amount of air traffic in the area.
