She has been the target of cruel comments online that have slammed her appearance and weight.

But Selena Gomez is now discussing how overcoming and ignoring the criticism ultimately influenced her upcoming album, Revival.

During an interview with Extra, the 23-year-old admitted that she 'was getting a lot of hate for my body and "gaining weight," and so I was in Mexico and I was just feeling all of this stuff and I would be lying to you if I said it didn't kind of hurt my feelings, but I kind of channelled that into my music.'

It wasn't even lunch time and Selena Gomez had already worn three different outfits for appearances in London to promote her new single.

Selena was first spotted in the British capital heading to Kiss FM wearing a red sequin dress teamed with opaque tights, platforms and a Louis Vuitton handbag. Keeping her accessories the same, Selena swapped her embellished mini for a jumper dress by Edun, before changing into a sleeveless white coat.

The emotional experience happened while Selena was in Mexico with her 'favourite' producers and writers to work on her upcoming album.

'I felt like everybody was saying so much, and I'm like, "I need to say something," even if it has nothing to do with that,' she said of writing the music.

'My songs on the record are Survivors, are Kill 'Em With Kindness, Rise, it's all geared towards me trying to be heard, and I think this is the best thing I've ever done in my whole career,' said Selena, who also added she has commiserated with gal pals Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato over negative comments online.

Selena, who was promoting her upcoming animated film Transylvania 2, also revealed that she had temporarily deleted her Instagram account off her phone to ignore mean-spirited comments.

The actress said: 'Well I think it's so hard now more then ever 'cause there's so much access to people's heart, and that really bums me out because it's hard to ignore all that.

'You know, I've had to delete Instagram off my phone for a week and just kind of not get on it. 'Cause it is crazy, and I couldn't image being 13 and dealing with it.

'So I mean my only compassion towards kids is like, "You can't listen to it, you have to know that you're made individually to be who you are and you should just be able to find your happiness."

This is not the first time Selena has spoken publically about embracing her body image online.

While on a holiday in Mexico back in April, the starlet seemingly addressed supposed criticism over her weight, as she posted a sultry photo of herself in a one-piece swimsuit and announced that she is happy with herself and that 'there's more to love'.

'I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove,' she wrote along with her striking photo.

The photo appeared to be taken during the trip to Mexico she referenced in her interview with Extra.

Selena is now beginning to release music from her upcoming album, and has recently dropped another single entitled Same Old Love.

The song is the second single off Selena's new album Revival, with Good For You being the first.

The album comes out on October 9, but fans who pre-order it will immediately receive a copy of Same Old Love.

Speaking about her new record on Monday, Selena told E! News: 'I feel like I'm a pregnant woman at nine months and I just want the baby to come out already because it means the world to me, and it's so great for me to actually be heard.'
