Demurely-dressed First daughters Sasha and Malia Obama skip classes to meet Pope Francis in elegant knee-length ensembles

  • President Obama, Michelle and their daughters Malia and Sasha met Pope Francis when he landed at Joint Base Andrews
  • The 78-year-old pontiff landed in Washington on Tuesday afternoon for his first visit to the U.S.
  • The Pope arrived from Cuba, where he urged the Communist-run island to maintain good relations with its strong neighbor

First Lady Michelle Obama is known for her fashion sense, and now miniskirt-loving Sasha and Malia have upped the sartorial stakes by showing off sweetly fashionable, yet modest, outfits for their historic meeting with Pope Francis.

The girls took time off school to greet the 78-year-old Roman Catholic leader immediately after his plane landed on the tarmac of Joint Base Andrews outside Washington.

Fourteen-year-old Sasha was wearing a pleated colorblock skirt by Kate Spade, while Malia, 16, paired a short-sleeved black top with a coordinating graphic print skirt that also fell below the knee.

Malia and Sasha both looked thrilled to be at the event

The First Lady looked impeccable in a belted powder blue dress with a cowl neck. Over the past few years, the emerging style of the two girls, especially self-assured Malia, have been closely observed by the world.

Both sisters have come a long way from the wide-eyed children that they once were, often trussed up in overly mature gowns and stiff high-collared dresses. As they mature into elegant young women, the teens have swapped hoodies and jumpers for more feminine printed dresses and ballet flats.

The First family shook the Pope's hand at the start of his five-day U.S. tour, which coincides with the United Nations summit that will see more than 100 world leaders arrive in New York.

The Argentine-born pontiff comes to the U.S. bearing a message that the power and wealth that Washington symbolizes should be made to serve humanity, and not the other way around.

A line of cardinals, bishops and archbishops stood waiting for the pope alongside crowds and a high school band, playing music in his honor. When the plane finished taxi-ing, and the red carpet was rolled out, everyone fell quiet.

Joe Biden and his wife Jill were also at the base to greet Francis.

During his visit, the Pope is also expected to discuss immigration, a top issue for him since in 2013.

Immigration has become a hot-button topic during early stages of the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign with Republican front-runner Donald Trump and other candidates proposing building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border to stem crossings and ending birthright citizenship.

Be the First Lady of style in a Carolina Herrera dress like Michelle

It's not every day that someone gets to shake hands with the Pope, but then again Michelle Obama isn't just anyone. The First Lady wore a custom made Carolina Herrera dress to greet the Catholic leader along with a pair of metallic kitten heel pumps.

The demure dress featured a cowl neckline, belted waist and pleated knee length skirt. We can’t get enough of the soft, pastel hue which went quite well with Michelle’s natural makeup and loose curls.

The Venezuelan designer is known for dressing President’s wives and royalty like Queen Letizia of Spain, so we weren’t too surprised that the Mrs. Obama chose a piece from her collection. Click right to get a similar look at Neiman Marcus.
