Stop judging pregnant women! Eva Mendes says it’s 'not fair' to attack the fashion choices of expectant mothers
- The actress, 41, mostly avoided the paparazzi and the red carpet while she was pregnant with her one-year-old daughter, Esmerelda
- The New York & Company spokesmodel thinks maternity style should be 'off-limits' when it comes to fashion critiques
- Eva admits that she didn't even try to be fashionable while she was expecting, sticking mostly to oversized T-shirts
A year after giving birth to her daughter, Esmeralda, Eva Mendes is declaring that critiquing maternity style should be off-limits.
The 41-year-old actress barely stepped out in maternity wear herself while she was expecting her little girl with Ryan Gosling, but she still thinks that any woman outfitting a bump should be immune to comments about her fashion choices.
'I don't think it's fair to comment on [pregnant] women,' she told ELLE.com. 'I think that's when we should be off-limits!'
Leave 'em alone: Eva Mendes, 41, says that women shouldn't be judged for their style while pregnant
Signature style: Though she said she mostly wore oversized T-shirts while pregnant with her one-year-old daughter Esmerelda, she's now back to 'easy', feminine skirts and dresses (pictured)
So secretive: She and Ryan Gosling rarely step out together, and Eva was hardly seen on the red carpet or by paparazzi while she was expecting
It's certainly true that looking chic while pregnant comes with a whole host of new challenges - your body is an entirely different shape, there are limited options available, and you might not even comfortable and energetic some of the time.
And as so many other stars have experienced, the fashion world can be cruel to anyone who doesn't jump right in and master maternity style with the same ease as Blake Lively or Olivia Wilde.
Which is why the Hitch star believes moms-to-be should get a pass when it comes to those Best and Worst Dressed lists for as long as growing new life in their wombs.
Pre-baby bump: In fact, the New York & Company spokesmodel made only appeared on the red carpet a few times while she was expecting - but before her bump was showing (pictured)
Laid-back mom: Except for a few early-pregnancy looks (pictured), Eva says she 'didn't do anything style-wise' while pregnant
Going girly: Now a year after giving birth, she's back to her prefers skirts and dresses
In fact, she said, she didn't even try to look stylish or trendy while her bump was growing. When asked if she had any advice for expectant moms based on her own experiences, she was totally honest about the fact that she threw the fashion rule book out the window.
'Oh god no! I was basically in, like, an oversized t-shirt, a very oversized t-shirt, for a long time,' she said. 'I didn't do anything style-wise!'
Now a week after Esmerelda turned one, Eva is back to her more flirty, feminine go-to look - though the New York & Company spokesmodel, who has her own collection for the brand, admitted that she still doesn't like anything that requires too much effort.
'Especially these days, I'm going for whatever is easy, and I find dresses and skirts to be kind of the easiest attire for me,' she said.
Uh-oh: Moms like Kourtney Kardashian (left) and Jessica Biel (right) experienced a lot of criticism for their maternity fashion choices
Caught by the fashion police: Kim Kardashian, in particular, has perhaps earned the most negativity for her materntiy wear
Mega-fashionably moms: Other stars, however - like Olivia Wilde (left), Blake Lively (center), and Jaime King (right) were applauded for looking incredibly chic with a baby bump
Her little one isn't going over-the-top with designer duds, either, so North West and Blue Ivy don't need to worry about any new competition. Eva explained with a laugh: 'She's in diapers! She's a baby!'
However, liking her outfits to be 'easy' certainly doesn't also mean 'sloppy'. As Eva infamously told Extra earlier this year, she doesn't believe in wearing sweatpants - especially since she wants to keep her man happy and interested.
'You can't do sweatpants. No,' she said. 'Ladies, number one cause of divorce in America? Sweatpants. No. Can't do that.'
