Acel Moore Minority Career Development Workshop
This program for high school minority students seeks to give them an introduction to the field of journalism. They are taught reporting, writing, editing and photography by Inquirer editors. The program runs for four Saturdays in February at The Inquirer. The students help write, edit and produce their own newspaper, First Take, and create a web site of their stories on philly.com. INTERNSHIPS
In the Fall and Spring Semesters, The Inquirer will sponsor as many as 12 part-time internships for academic credit. Each intern will work 15 hours a week, preferably in two 7.5-hour shifts to be arranged by the student with his or her supervisor. The shifts may include night and weekend work. In the summer semester, the intern will work 40 hours a week as a regular shift. Pay is $7.25/hr during the academic year, $12/hr in summer.
DEADLINES:
Jan. 1 to apply for the Summer internship.
May 15 for the Fall.
Nov. 30 for the Spring.
JOB DESCRIPTIONS (Not all internships will be offered in each semester):
Reporter: Reports and writes news, business, sports and/or feature stories for print and online.
Requirements:
- Applicants are encouraged to possess multimedia skills and be familiar with digital photography, video journalism and editing software, Adobe Photoshop, Windows Media, Final Cut Pro and Sorenson Squeeze.
- Ability to write on deadline.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Adherence to journalistic ethics.
- Knowledge of newspaper style.
- Good grammar and language usage.
- A car and valid driver's license are desirable but not required, except in sports.
- Reporters will be assigned to desks (listed below) based on their experience, interest, and transportation availability.
Photographer: Takes news and sports photographs and produces multimedia stories for print and online.
Requirements:
- Applicants are encouraged to possess multimedia skills and be familiar with digital photography, video journalism and editing software, Adobe Photoshop, Windows Media and Final Cut Pro.
- Ability to shoot, edit and transmit photos and videos from location.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Adherence to journalistic ethics.
- Knowledge of newspaper style.
- Access to a car and a valid driver's license are required.
Graphic artist: Researches and creates information graphics for print and online.
Requirements:
- Strong familiarity with the Macintosh operating system (OSX), Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Quark XPress. (Knowledge of 3D modeling programs and GIS software is a plus.)
- Solid journalism skills, including the ability to write copy on deadline.
- Adherence to journalistic ethics.
Copy editor: Edits copy, writes headlines and photo captions, checks proofs.
Requirements:
- Interns will be expected to edit stories for style, grammar and content, and write accurate headlines and captions consistent in tone with the story.
- Ability to maintain a flow of copy and headlines and to meet deadlines is critical.
- High proficiency in grammar and knowledge of newspaper style such as the AP Stylebook.
- Adherence to journalistic ethics.
- Candidates must pass an editing test/interview. A car is not required.
DEPARTMENTS:
New Jersey and Pennsylvania suburban interns will work with the Metro suburban staff, writing news stories and features. They also will contribute to weekly-zoned sections with a heavy component of interactive, multimedia and Web-based journalism. Successful candidates for these positions must have access to a car. New Jersey and Pennsylvania editors will supervise and act as mentors.
City Desk interns will work as general assignment reporters. Their duties will include covering breaking news, meetings, events and news conferences, doing police checks, writing obituaries, and localizing national stories. They also will be expected to contribute various multimedia components to the Web site. A car is desirable but not required. A city editor will supervise; a city desk reporter will act as mentor.
Features interns will work on the Weekend section and other sections as needed. Applicants should have strong writing, reporting and multimedia skills, and an interest in pop culture, arts and lifestyle topics. Supervisor will be a features editor; a features reporter will act as mentor.
Sports interns will cover high school, college and general assignment events on deadline. Some computer expertise is necessary because stories may be filed on location using a laptop. Applicants must have a car. Assistant sports editors will supervise and mentor.
Graphics interns will focus on researching, creating and, if necessary, writing copy for many types of information graphics, both for the newspaper and the Web site. They may also choose to work on the design and construction of Features section fronts. They must be proficient users of Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Quark XPress, all on the Macintosh platform, and must work well on deadline. The graphics editor will supervise; a staff artist or Features page designer will mentor.
EVALUATIONS:
The students will be evaluated as determined by the academic advisers. In addition to formal evaluations, the supervising editor will discuss progress regularly with each student.
REQUIREMENTS:
Each intern applicant must be an enrolled student -- preference is given to juniors and seniors. For the Fall and Spring Semesters, the intern must be receiving academic credit for the internship.
He/she must submit:
- a cover letter
- a resume that includes previous journalism experience
- 3 to 5 clips (in the case of a graphic artist, photographer or online applicant, a portfolio; copy editors may submit headline clips, but none are required)
- a credit confirmation letter from the academic institution
- an interview by phone or in person, if The Inquirer requests one
