Rescue workers treated injured pilgrims and made desperate attempts to resuscitate others after the stampede in Mina, where nearly two million Muslims were taking part in the last major rite of the Hajj. Pictures showed a horrific scene, with scores of bodies - the men dressed in the simple terry cloth garments worn during Hajj - lying amid crushed wheelchairs and water bottles along a sunbaked street (left), while scores of victims were stretchered off to hospital (right) amid the chaos. It was not immediately clear what had caused the stampede. The pilgrims (inset) had converged just outside Mecca to throw pebbles at one of three walls representing Satan, the symbolic 'stoning of the devil' that marks the last day of the event. Paul Smith, 29 arrives at Leicester Crown Court.  A woman told a murder trial she felt "fear, shock and sick" at seeing a teenager repeatedly stamping on a man's head as he lay on the floor.  Lindsey Powell claimed Paul Smith, then aged 16, used such force upon alleged victim, Ivan Barrs, she could hear the impact making thudding sounds.  The attack happened in the corridor of Mr Barrs's flat in Leicester, in the early hours of May 13, 2003.  Mr Barrs, then 34, suffered a fractured skull and permanent brain damage that left him in a persistent vegetative state, needing 24 hour care.  Ms Powell, who was giving evidence for the prosecution, said Mr Barrs was lying on the floor with blood coming from his head.  Despite having a mobile phone with her she had not called the emergency services saying: "I just didn't think."  She left the scene and Smith followed a few minutes later saying Ivan was "all right," she told the jury.  Mr Barrs was found seriously injured by a neighbour at about

Stephen Findlay, 77, has been tending to plots at his voluntarily run cemetery for almost 25 years to create a lasting tribute for hundreds of family companions. The site at Cullen, Moray, almost an acre in size, is the final resting place family pets but also seals and dolphins washed ashore nearby. But the landowners have now accused Mr Findlay of "encroaching" the agreed boundaries of the pet cemetery, and have warned against further expansion. Seafield Estates say the pensioner has been burying pets in areas he is not permitted to, but Mr Findlay insists that only stonework has exceeded the cemetery's borders.

Caretaker Stephen Findlay, 77, has been running the one-acre site in Moray for 23 years so that grieving animal owners have somewhere to pay their respects to beloved family pets.
