Goldman Sachs boss Lloyd Blankfein falls ill but expects to be cured

Lloyd Blankfein, veteran chief executive of Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs, has cancer.

He informed colleagues, clients and shareholders in a statement yesterday that he has a form of lymphoma, a disease which attacks the immune system, but expects to be cured.

Blankfein, 61, will have treatment including chemotherapy in New York. He has been told he will ‘be able to work substantially as normal’.

Despite the reassurance, shares still fell 2.7 per cent in early trading. Blankfein has been at the helm of Goldman since 2006 and has been credited with steering it through the financial crisis.

But he has become controversial because of his astronomical pay packages which have seen him amass an estimated fortune of more than $1billion.
