'You don't have it in Australia yet but I guarantee you will!' Stephen Fry says his marriage to Elliot Spencer has helped strengthen calls to legalise gay unions

They tied the knot in January in a low key marriage register in Dereham in Norfolk and declared the news on Twitter.

And as the 57-year-old actor continues to enjoy married life with Elliot Spencer, who is 30 years his junior, he insists their official union has bolstered calls for same-sex marriage globally.

The quirky presenter, who will perform his stand-up show Telling Tales in Australia next month, told Thursday night's The Project: 'You don't have it [same-sex marriage] in Australia yet but I guarantee you will'.

Referring to the growing clamour for same-sex marriages, Stephen said: 'The calls for it are so strong.'

'The examples of it around the world, and I count myself as one, hasn't threatened marriage of unlike sex in the least, in fact it strengthens the idea of marriage because everyone believes in it.'

The Cambridge-educated screenwriter, author, presenter and activist, wed stand-up comic Elliot after a 12-week engagement at the turn of the new year.

The jubilant couple announced the news on Twitter, with Stephen posting a picture of the newlyweds signing the marriage register beaming broadly.

The picture was captioned: 'Gosh. @ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing.'

And last month, the comedian expressed his delight that same sex couples can now marry in Ireland, adding he is 'dizzyingly' happy since marrying his fiancé.

Speaking at the Hay Festival, he said: 'I congratulate the people of Ireland - I'm happy they've decided to respect the sanctity of marriage.

'It's not about being right or expressing how clever and smart and progressive we are - it's about giving others permission to join in.

'Married life has suited me wonderfully. I'm dizzyingly happy and I'm looking well particularly because of that - and I'm as well fed as always.'

In contrast, former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott steadfastly refused to make legal gay marriage, but his replacement Malcolm Turnbull says he will endeavour to ensure same-sex marriage is legislated 'sooner rather than later'.

Mr Turnbull has vowed to hold a 'people’s vote', which will lead to a decision on same-sex marriage being delayed until after the next election.

However, Liberal MP Warren Entsch insists the new Prime Minister will propose a timeframe and question before voters went to the polls.

Meanwhile, Stephen is preparing to visit Australia next month with his show about his life telling the Project: 'It's about my life which has been turbulent and an eventful one, but it's a comedy show, I hope.'

Speaking of his on going battle with bi-polar, he said: 'It's not always good for me to speak about it as I don't want to become a professional bi-polar sufferer.

'Sometimes when people want me to talk about mental health for two hours or so, I have to say "Do you mind if I don't?'"

Stephen will be touring Australia with his show Telling Tales this November, beginning at the Royal Theatre, Canberra, on the 15th.
