Marilyn Monroe's flirty white dress beats Madonna's conical bra to top poll of most iconic outfit in fashion history

  • Monroe's dress in The Seven Year Itch is fashion favourite among women
  • Beating Madge's iconic pointy cone bra designed by Jean Paul Gaultier
  • Geri Halliwell's Union Jack dress is given poll position by men

The white dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch has beaten Madonna’s busty cone bra and Jennifer Lopez's super-low-cut Versace dress as the most iconic outfit in fashion history.

E-retailer Kaleidoscope posed the question to its customers and more than half the women polled picked the flirty film gown as the most memorable moment in fashion over the last 100 years.

Meanwhile men recalled Geri Halliwell's Union Jack dress as their favourite, and gave a shout out to Audrey Hepburn's LBD too.

Fifty-one per cent of women voted for Marilyn's dress, which famously blew up to reveal her perfect pins as she stood seductively over a Subway grate in Billy Wilder’s 1955 film.

The Hollywood starlet’s halter-neck number was designed by William Travilla and sold by actress Debbie Reynolds in 2011 for a staggering US$5.6 million (£3.7million).

Meanwhile Madge’s iconic Jean-Paul Gaultier bustier, designed for her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, came in at a distant second with 15 per cent.

In third place was Jennifer Lopez’s eye-popping low-cut green Versace dress, worn at the 2000 Grammy Awards.

Most women said the reason these garments are memorable is because they ‘stand out from the crowd’.

But when they were asked if they would ever wear the racy outfits themselves, more than half said ‘no way!’

On the flipside the men polled gave strikingly different answers, with 37 per cent crowning Geri Halliwell’s 1997 Brit Awards Union Jack mini-dress as most iconic.

Kaleidoscope fashion designer Kirsten Emery said: ‘We were fascinated to see which outfits from the past century British men and women deem to be the most iconic.

‘All of the outfits highlighted have a unique twist to them which has meant that they have stood the test of time, and still remain front of mind with the British public.

‘Not all of us would be brave enough to slip on Geri’s mini dress or head to a party in JLo’s Versace frock, but we do all like to be bold in our own way and put our own individual stamp on our style choices.’

Monroe’s sultry ensemble was a second favourite with 20 per cent of the male vote, while silver screen star Audrey Hepburn’s Breakfast At Tiffany’s black cocktail dress won over 15 per cent of men polled.

Surprisingly, Monroe’s second husband baseball star Joe DiMaggio is said to have hated his wife's slinky little white number.

Although Monroe earned her sexy stripes way before the white dress.

She posed nude when she was out of work in 1949 at the age of 22 - and the original colour separations released recently are estimated to be worth $6 million (£4million).
