A rare hand-coloured map of the world from 1862 shows how the Japanese misunderstood Australia's borders. The map, which has been acquired by the State Library of NSW, features blue and red-inked boundaries dividing Australia into sections that are very different from the state boundaries we see today. The blue area is meant to represent unsettled areas which have yet to be fully explored, while the red outline shows settled areas with known townships. But by 1862 most maps of the continent clearly had the borders around New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia, so the Japanese were using incorrect information to teach residents about Australia during the mid-19th century.
