'Sweatshirts are f**king important... sweatshirts are the future,' declares Kanye West as he insists his latest collection isn't a statement about race

He’s working on a new album and plotting his run for President in 2020, but Kanye West is also focused on the simpler things in life.

After showcasing his second Yeezy collection at New York Fashion Week, the 38-year-old sat down with Vanity Fair, discussing – among other things – his love of sweatshirts.

‘I was so happy to just show so many sweatshirts,’ he said. ‘It’s as simple as that. I think sweatshirts are the way of the future.’

Revealing some of the effort that went into his designs, Kanye added: ‘And we worked so hard on our development of our actual sweatshirts to make them fall a certain way, the dyeing that we do, the type of washing where we take a thicker Japanese stretch French terry and wash it down to where it keeps its original qualities but then feels so thin.

‘Sweatshirts are f**king important. That might sound like the funniest quote ever,’ he added. ‘How can you say all this stuff about running for president in 2020 and then say sweatshirts are important? But they are. Just mark my words. Mark my words like Mark Twain.’

Kanye’s presentation was attended by several celebrities and saw US Vogue editor Anna Wintour sitting front row.

The first group of models were very blonde and wearing beige tones, while the last group of models were black.

Kanye told Vanity Fair that the decision to group the models this way ‘had nothing to do with race’.

He explained: ‘It was only colours of human beings and the way these palettes of people work together and really just stressing the importance of colour, the importance of that to our sanity, these Zen, monochrome palettes.

‘I want it to become more of a moving painting than a political statement or a fashion statement. This is strictly … not strictly, you can take it how you want; obviously I’m a very socially charged human being.

‘But at the end of the day, I’m just simply an artist trying to express myself, trying to finish my sentences just like my daughter can.’

While Kanye has many strings to his bow – and told the publication that he is already thinking about his next collection – he revealed that wife Kim Kardashian and their two-year-old daughter North are his priority.

‘It’s family first,’ the rapper said. ‘And then when I work on music, I’ll sequester myself and work on it with a team of three, four, or five really focused experts for two weeks at a time.
