Middlesbrough are ready to offer Tottenham two players for Jermain Defoe.

More Middlesbrough news

Spurs have been long-time admirers of England winger Stewart Downing as well as his club understudy Adam Johnson who spent much of last season on loan at Watford.

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has issued a hands-off warning to both enquiries but is now reported to be more interested in a deal with the news that Spurs are willing to release striker Jermain Defoe.

Downing is rated at the same £10m mark as Defoe and although he has never asked for a move, a new club could reignite his international hopes.

Southgate is looking for cover in attack with Spurs old boy Mido recovering from injury and still reeling from the summer departures of Yakubu and Mark Viduka.
