Rosemary Kennedy went from a vibrant beauty to a feeble spinster after forced lobotomy

Rosemary Kennedy, the eldest daughter of Joseph and Rose, had her life destroyed because of the fear and ignorance of her father. Joe wanted her out of sight as his pushed his son toward the presidency, hiding her away in convents and sanitariums. The radical experimental surgery on his 23-year-old daughter was based on a misdiagnosis. She was not mentally retarded as Joe was told by a ruthless and irresponsible doctor but learning disabled. Rosemary spent more than 50 years living in a Wisconsin hospital cared for by a nun when she could have been treated with therapy. There are no photos of her brothers JFK or Bobby visitng their sister after her surgery.

Test EVERY diesel car in the UK: As Volkswagen storm grows, minister orders urgent action to check whether other manufacturers have cheated emissions data

Volkswagen emissions scandal grows as UK backs checks on all models

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin (bottom right) ordered officials to run tests on every type of diesel vehicle in the country after Volkswagen's emissions-rigging scandal was brought to light. The Vehicle Certification Agency will compare the lab results - long criticised for giving unrealistic readings - to 'real-world driving' data to sniff out any more cheating. It comes as VW's chief executive Martin Winterkorn could be lining up at the bank to collect an enormous £23million severance package.

How Gestapo thugs waltzed into plum jobs after the war: Their horrors are well chronicled, but new book reveals a deeply shocking twist

How Gestapo thugs waltzed into plum jobs after the war

A new book reveals Nazi Germany's Gestapo were not as mindless as we imagine. The majority in senior positions had been ambitious young middle-class law graduates. Some held doctorates. According to author Frank McDonough, the high ranks of the Geheime Staatspolize resembled a university senior common room more than a roughneck police station. Some, like Adolf Eichmann (top right), perhaps the most notorious Gestapo officer of all, were properly sentenced, but others - including Dr Werner Best (bottom right), endured a short jail sentence before taking highly paid jobs in West German companies. Many escaped justice entirely.

How Kate Moss is proof you end up with the face you deserve: Model's years of smoking, drinking and sunbathing had to take their toll, say experts

Experts reveal why it's proof you end up with the face you deserve

It takes a brave - or foolish - woman to stand next to a rival almost half your age, especially when she's just taken your crown as the UK's highest paid supermodel. So, at 41, Kate Moss was perhaps unwise to pose next to her fresh-faced successor, Cara Delevingne, 23, at a fashion event in Milan this week. So how has Kate's face changed since she exploded into the British fashion world as a teenager (inset) in 1988 - before Cara was even born?

Did the PM trick his party into the coalition? The battle for No.10 was on a knife edge. But many Tory MPs feel Dave wilfully misled them to get their backing

Did David Cameron trick the Conservative party into the coalition?

Following the election, David Cameron claimed that his decision to aim for a coalition with the Lib Dems was the result of a 'fairly epiphanous moment', but in truth, it had been in the mix for months. Behind closed doors, he had assembled a special unit - Osborne, William Hague, Oliver Letwin and Chief of Staff Edward Llewellyn - tasked with preparing the ground for negotiations. The team met twice for Sunday night dinner at Osborne's house, where Letwin presented the others with a line-by-line study of the Lib Dem manifesto, highlighting areas of potential agreement and those of possible discord. Cameron was clear that, unable to form a majority government, they had to begin talks with the Lib Dems about forming a coalition. But in a rare example of strategic discord, George Osborne disagreed. Pictured: David Cameron with Nick Clegg during the first press conference following the 2010 election.

Horror at the Hajj: At least 700 people are crushed to death and hundreds injured in stampede during Muslim pilgrimage in Mecca just two weeks after crane collapse killed 109

Muslim Hajj stampede near Mecca leaves 700 people crushed to death in Saudi Arabia

Rescue workers treated injured pilgrims and made desperate attempts to resuscitate others after the stampede in Mina, where nearly two million Muslims were taking part in the last major rite of the Hajj. It is believed the stampede happened at the intersection of two streets (top right), when two waves of pilgrims travelling in different directions met. Pictures showed a horrific scene, with scores of bodies - the men dressed in the simple terry cloth garments worn during Hajj - lying amid crushed wheelchairs and water bottles along a sunbaked street (left), while scores of victims were stretchered off to hospital amid the chaos. It was not immediately clear what had caused the stampede. The pilgrims (bottom right) had converged just outside Mecca to throw pebbles at one of three walls representing Satan, the symbolic 'stoning of the devil' that marks the last day of the event. The Hajj is among the five pillars of Islam and every capable Muslim must perform it at least once in a lifetime.

It's Il Papa in the Big Apple: Huge crowds greet Francis as he lands in NYC and then leads

Pope Francis was greeted by thousands of adoring well wishers as he arrived in New York and made his way to St Patrick's Cathedral to lead evening prayers. The next stage of the Pope's whirlwind tour of America saw him driven through the streets of Midtown, Manhattan, in his Pope Mobile as worshipers who had waited for hours to get a glimpse of him screamed with delight. A huge motorcade of police cars, ambulances and Secret Service vehicles escorted the Pontiff as he made his way along a packed 5th Avenue to the Cathedral. Tremendous choir music rang out and worshipers cheered as the Pope entered, stopping to bless a wheelchair-bound girl and accept a bouquet of flowers from one of the hundreds inside. He used his touching sermon to send his sympathies to the families of several hundred Muslim pilgrims killed in a stampede today during Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, offering prayers to his 'Islamic brothers and sisters'.

Meat is murder and milk is manslaughter: ANDREW PIERCE profiles the militant vegan who is Jeremy Corbyn's new voice on farming

ANDREW PIERCE profiles Kerry McCarthy who is Jeremy Corbyn's voice on farming

Kerry McCarthy is a hardline opponent of the killing of animals in the food chain, which makes her one of the most controversial choices as farming minister in living memory, writes ANDREW PIERCE. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn did not even know of McCarthy's hardline views when he appointed her in his shadow cabinet reshuffle. A vegan since 1992, it emerged this week that McCarthy (pictured right with Paul McCartney's ex-wife Heather Mills calling for a ban on keeping pigs in tight pens) had made clear her uncompromising views in the vegetarian magazine Viva! before the General Election. 'I really believe that meat should be treated in exactly the same way as tobacco, with public campaigns to stop people eating it,' she said. While the Countryside Alliance dismissed her views as 'cranky' and Farmers Weekly journalist Johann Tasker said her new post was like 'appointing a pacifist as shadow defence secretary', there is little hope of agricultural lobby groups changing her mind.
