It's Il Papa in the Big Apple: Huge crowds greet Francis as he lands in NYC and then leads

Pope Francis was greeted by thousands of adoring well wishers as he arrived in New York and made his way to St Patrick's Cathedral to lead evening prayers. The next stage of the Pope's whirlwind tour of America saw him driven through the streets of Midtown, Manhattan, in his Pope Mobile as worshipers who had waited for hours to get a glimpse of him screamed with delight. A huge motorcade of police cars, ambulances and Secret Service vehicles escorted the Pontiff as he made his way along a packed 5th Avenue to the Cathedral. Tremendous choir music rang out and worshipers cheered as the Pope entered, stopping to bless a wheelchair-bound girl and accept a bouquet of flowers from one of the hundreds inside. He used his touching sermon to send his sympathies to the families of several hundred Muslim pilgrims killed in a stampede today during Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, offering prayers to his 'Islamic brothers and sisters'.

Rheinmetall?s high-energy laser effectors get moving

The Rheinmetall Live Laser Demonstration 2013 set a new standard for operational deployment of the Group?s mobile and stationary high-energy laser (HEL) effectors.

In a European first, three different vehicle platforms were equipped with HEL effectors. The versatile tactical potential of this forward-looking technology was amply demonstrated in a wide variety of operational scenarios.

A high point of the demonstration came with the successful engagement of a swarm of jet-powered drones by a stationary Skyshield air defence system, whose effectiveness likewise relies on a HEL effector.

The Skyshield HEL effector enabled successful engagement of a series of incoming generic mortar rounds. The maximum effective range of this technology demonstrator is 3,000 metres, an increase of 1,000 metres compared to the previous year?s performance.

Trump gets BOOED by crowd as he turns up to see the Pope - after he rejected Francis's call for compassion on immigration

Trump turns out to see the Pope - but The Donald gets BOOED by the crowd rejecting

As thousands of people crammed along Fifth Avenue today hoping to see Pope Francis making his way to St Patrick's Cathedral, Donald Trump couldn't resist making an appearance. Walking out on to the balcony of Trump Tower, not once, but twice, he was met with loud boos and jeers from the largely Hispanic crowd who also shouted 'feo' - Spanish for ugly. Trump, who has often been painted as the anti-Pope during Francis's visit to America, has seized the opportunity to disagree with the Pontiff, particularly over immigration and climate change.

PIERS MORGAN says 'The Pope’s right: America doesn't have to be driven by bigots

I'm not surprised John Boehner sobbed like a baby in Congress today. Aside from the fact that the esteemed Speaker of the House seems disconcertingly incapable of ever holding his tear-ducts together, he'd also had to listen to his Holy Father - like me, Boehner is a Catholic - giving his Republican party a damn good papal pasting. Pope Francis is an extraordinary man; feisty, funny, highly opinionated, innovative, and seriously courageous. It takes real guts to walk into someone's house and tell them everything you hate about it. But that's exactly what the Pope did today.

What has happened to the hurricanes? Forecasters say NO severe storms have hit western Atlantic this year for the first time since 1914

The Atlantic tropical cyclone basin has seen several named tropical storms thus far in 2015. But when it comes to hurricanes, this season hasn't packed much of a punch, particularly in the western Atlantic.

Eric Blake, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center (NHC), commented on the lack of hurricanes west of 55 degrees longitude in the Atlantic basin so far this season. Blake said this marks the first time there have been no western Atlantic hurricanes through Sept. 22 since 1914, when there weren't any.

The 1914 season was the last time no hurricanes formed anywhere in the Atlantic basin, which includes the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

How Gestapo thugs waltzed into plum jobs after the war: Their horrors are well chronicled, but new book reveals a deeply shocking twist

How Gestapo thugs waltzed into plum jobs after the war

A new book reveals Nazi Germany's Gestapo were not as mindless as we imagine. The majority in senior positions had been ambitious young middle-class law graduates. Some held doctorates. According to author Frank McDonough, the high ranks of the Geheime Staatspolize resembled a university senior common room more than a roughneck police station. Some, like Adolf Eichmann (top right), perhaps the most notorious Gestapo officer of all, were properly sentenced, but others - including Dr Werner Best (bottom right), endured a short jail sentence before taking highly paid jobs in West German companies. Many escaped justice entirely.

Bella Bond 'will be buried with her father's family', he claims as meth-addict mother is held on $1m charged with her death

Baby Doe? has a name: Bella.

Police say they have identified the 4-year-old girl found dead inside a bag this summer on Deer Island as the daughter of Rachelle Bond of Mattapan, Massachusetts.

Police are searching for Bond, 40, and Michael McCarthy, 35. They are persons of interest at this time.

The three month-long search to determine the identity of Baby Doe ended Thursday when someone close to the child?s family reached out to police, according to law enforcement.

Severely neglected Jabba the cat weighing 26LBS tossed from car and left in a park by cruel owners

Nancy Davey, the head of cat adoption at the East Greenwich Animal Protection League, shakes her head in disgust. She?s just gotten a new cat at the shelter: a 15-year-old male that?s been abandoned in a local park. And what makes matters worse is the cat?s weight ? he?s 26 pounds, morbidly obese.

Horror at the Hajj: At least 700 people are crushed to death and hundreds injured in stampede during Muslim pilgrimage in Mecca just two weeks after crane collapse killed 109

Muslim Hajj stampede near Mecca leaves 700 people crushed to death in Saudi Arabia

Rescue workers treated injured pilgrims and made desperate attempts to resuscitate others after the stampede in Mina, where nearly two million Muslims were taking part in the last major rite of the Hajj. It is believed the stampede happened at the intersection of two streets (top right), when two waves of pilgrims travelling in different directions met. Pictures showed a horrific scene, with scores of bodies - the men dressed in the simple terry cloth garments worn during Hajj - lying amid crushed wheelchairs and water bottles along a sunbaked street (left), while scores of victims were stretchered off to hospital amid the chaos. It was not immediately clear what had caused the stampede. The pilgrims (bottom right) had converged just outside Mecca to throw pebbles at one of three walls representing Satan, the symbolic 'stoning of the devil' that marks the last day of the event. The Hajj is among the five pillars of Islam and every capable Muslim must perform it at least once in a lifetime.

Baby boy found dead in a Walmart parking lot after being left in SUV for TEN HOURS

An 8-month-old baby boy was found dead in the parking lot of a Walmart in northeast Ohio after he was left in a car by his family for nearly 10 hours.

Police received a 911 call at around 5.30pm Wednesday that the boy was discovered unresponsive in an SUV by his grandmother, a Macedonia Walmart employee.

The incident, which police are calling a ?tragic accident,? began after a father took his four children to a day care center just before 8.00am.

Lt. Vince Yakopovich said the man dropped off three of the kids but forgot about the baby, who was seated in the SUV?s third row.

After the children were taken to the day care, the father drove the maroon Buick to Garfield Heights and parked it in the shaded driveway.

There it remained until 11am, when, the boy?s grandmother drove the SUV to work without realizing the child was still in the back seat.

It was not until the 8-month-old's siblings were brought home from day care that his mother realized her son was not with them.
