Internet speeds on planes to take off: Aircraft passengers set to enjoy onboard WiFi that is up to 20 TIMES faster
- Gogo's 2Ku has WiFi speeds of 20 times the bandwidth now on US flights
- Peak speeds of more than 70Mbps will be delivered to the aircraft
- Seven airlines have signed up to test the tech covering 500 aeroplanes
When you're onboard an aircraft looking for entertainment, the faster the WiFi the better.
Up until now, passengers have had to be grateful for any service while up in the air.
But inflight entertainment is about to go undergo a revolution with the arrival of WiFi 20 times faster than the service currently available on US aircraft.
Faster wifi speeds will be welcome news to parents keen to distract their children while on a flight
Global aero-communications service provider, Gogo has announced it expects to launch commercial service of its 2Ku technology which delivers peaks speeds of more than 70Mbps, later this year.
2Ku has been designed to offer peak speeds of more than more than 20 times the bandwidth provided by Gogo's first generation Air to Ground solution in the US.
Gogo's chief technology officer, Anand Chari said: 'This is a significant milestone for Gogo and a seminal event for in-flight Internet.
'Clearing this regulatory hurdle brings us one step closer to enabling our airline partners and their passengers to enjoy the future of in-flight Internet.'
Staying connected: Workaholics or online shopaholics will have no reason to interrupt their habits while flying with the new technology
The other advantage to satellite-based Wi-Fi is that it works on international flights and over a body of water, reports LA Times.
Seven commercial airlines have committed to trialling 2Ku covering more than 500 commercial aircraft.
Gogo is due to launch commercial service later this year and begin installation in 2016.
