Revealed: How Hillary's right-hand woman Huma Abedin avoided disclosing her husband's business dealings after Clinton PERSONALLY signed off on employment deal

  • A stack of new emails given to Judicial Watch shows a months long back-and-forth between Huma Abedin and State Department employees
  • Abedin was required to disclose husband's assets as she transitioned into new job within State
  • 'I don't really know his clients or work' Abedin responded at one point
  • Meanwhile she asked the government to pay for her travel as she jetted to New York to work for State and outside clients

New emails show that Huma Abedin dodged disclosing financial information about her husband, disgraced congressman Anthony Weiner, as Hillary Clinton personally signed off on a special employment deal for her longtime aide.

In the spring of 2012, Abedin switched from being Clinton's deputy chief of staff at the State Department to the secretary of state's senior advisor, a job with the distinction of being a 'special government employee,' which allowed Abedin to bring in outside income as well.

Judicial Watch, a right-leaning advocacy group that files Freedom of Information Act lawsuits in the quest for greater government transparency, was given documents that show that Clinton personally signed off on Abedin's job move.

The documents also show months-long exchanges between Abedin and State Department employees as she seemingly dragged her feet on providing additional information about her husband's job and wealth.

'The records show that there was a rush to appoint Abedin to the position, which was initially set to begin on April 1, 2012 ,' Judicial Watch said in the release. 'When Abedin was finally approved in June 2012, she had failed to provide her husband Anthony Weiner's financial information, despite repeated requests from the State Department.'

On March 23, 2012, according to Judicial Watch, Clinton personally signed the form that would convert Abedin into a 'special government employee.'

This would allow Abedin to work simultaneously for the State Department, the Clinton Foundation and the New York City-based global advisory company Teneo.

'The arrangement provides the government with specialized expertise while the employee is allowed to continue to earn a living in the private sector,' explained an article on the distinction in Government Executive

Abedin tried taking advantage of this almost immediately by sending an email asking when she could start charging the government for travel.

'Have a few questions. One is time sensitive. I need to come down to state tomorrow,' she wrote. 'Can state start paying for my travel since NY is now my base? I've been paying personally for the last 6 months,' Abedin wrote.

The same week Abedin received an email from the State Department's Cynthia Motley, which included a financial disclosure request.

Abedin then spent the next few months in a back-and-forth over what she needed to disclose about her husband's assets.

On April 3, 2012, Abedin emailed Motley back and asked if she needed to include her husband's assets on the form.

'Anthony filed his separate disclosure last June. Nothing has changed. I don't need to include his stuff on mine, right? Just want to confirm Thanks!' Abedin wrote.

June 2011 was the last month Weiner spent in congress, before having to resign because he got caught lying about inappropriately sexting women.

Motley wrote back to Huma and said she did need to disclose Weiner's assets on the form.

A month later, Sarah Taylor, the chief of the financial disclosure division at State, wrote Abedin, noting the Clinton aide's report had been filed, but was missing information.

'I noticed your spouse had several assets that weren't reported on your report,' Taylor wrote in May 2012. 'Can you kindly provide an end of year summary statement so that I can update your report accurately?'

On June 4, Abedin received an email from Weiner containing financial information and forwarded it to Heather Samuelson and Marcella Green of State.

A day later, Taylor reached back out to Abedin to ask more questions.

'Does the organization your spouse works for do business with the Fed Gov? What about doing business with State? I tried to research the organization, but was not successful,' wrote Taylor asking Abedin for details on June 5.

'He runs his own consulting firm. I don't really know his clients or the work. I will ask him,' Abedin replied the next day. 'Is there a form we are supposed to be filling out?'

Taylor wrote back that no, there was no form, and instructed Abedin instead to ask Weiner for access to his financial statements, which needed to be added to Abedin's termination report as she was already cleared to become a 'special government employee.'

'I am happy to ask him,' Abedin replied. 'We are just both confused about what we need to be doing.'

Sixteen days later the conversation continues with another email from Taylor asking Abedin for the information. Taylor begins by saying that she had spoken with Samuelson, another State Department employee, 'and apparently there is some miscommunication.'

'I was waiting for you to provide additional information on your spouse's assets,' Taylor wrote in an email dated June 22, articulating, specifically, what types of information she needed.

Abedin, now vice chairwoman of Clinton's 2016 campaign, was able to change gigs without disclosing the information. And, according to Judicial Watch, another email suggested that as of August 29, 2013, Abedin still hadn't provided the required financial documentation.

'These documents show the Huma Abedin received special treatment contrary to law and that Hillary Clinton personally approved a corrupt patronage position,' said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

'These new documents are smoking gun evidence of what Hillary Clinton's separate email server was all about – keeping secret the corruption of her and her top staff. What else is out there?'

The Clinton campaign spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
