Lazaro works as a personal trainer at Anytime Fitness in London and works out everyday to maintain and develop his body, which has won him over 12 trophies and countless medals.

He started out at the age of 25 when going to the gym seemed to be the perfect way to get over the tragic loss of his first child, who was stillborn.

He says he never even thought about lifting weights before in his life but wanted to occupy his mind as much as possible and thought that lifting weights would be the ultimate way to get over the stress.

He then entered his very first competition within a year and came runner up. He recalls: 'Whenever the judge called us out for a pose, I had to look at what everybody else was doing and mimic them. With my body in great shape at the time I thought it would be enough to get a decent placing but never dreamed of coming in at second.'

He can now lift weights that men half his age would dream of. He said: 'I was insane – and completely hooked. I kept winning and placing in the top three, winning trophies never having won anything before.

'I believe that if you have the right mind you can just carry on going and continue to get better. Age is just a number to me and I would not let my age threaten my career.

'Age gives people an opportunity to lie back and take a step back. They will never believe how old I am when I tell them. As soon as I reveal my age they are in total shock and ask me straight away what the secret behind the body is. I just tell them determination, goals and persistence. The more active you are, the younger you will feel, it's that easy.'

Lazaro's diet is enriched with protein with a moderate amount of carbs and fats. He starts his day at 6am where he will down an LA Whey protein shake mixed with a litre of water. He then goes to the gym to train and follows his training with another serving of protein before having his first main meal of the day, which consists of 12 egg whites, turkey breast pieces and bowl of oats.

He then starts his personal training for the day where he has a pool of clients back to back. He continues to ensure he gets his protein by supplementing with more shakes along with protein-filled meals.

'It's not easy trying to fit it all in but once you have a schedule and your body gets use to the nutrition, it's pretty easy.'

Born in 1953, Lazaro is one of four children and was brought up in Cuba. His father worked as a factory worker while his mum was a housewife and teacher. After he finished graduating from university, he married his long-time girlfriend and joined the army.

Once he finished serving the army he and his wife fled to England and had their first child. This is where the tragic incident happened. 'I will never forget the day and it will be with me forever. It was the worst thing that could have possibility happened to both of us and it was a very hard time for me and my family.

'Training with weights just seemed to relieve stress and occupied by mind. I was intrigued about how the body develops and what one needs to do to get into shape. This is where I found out that it was not all about training but diet also plays a big factor in your overall results.

'My wife was very supportive and edged me to do my best. If anything, I do this for my son and every time I win a title I dedicate it to him.'
