'Let go of what was': Donna Air posts cryptic message on Instagram amid claims of a split from long-term boyfriend James Middleton

  • James, 28, is said to have ended his long-term relationship with Donna, 36
  • The pair met and started dating back in 2013
  • They were rumoured to be discussing engagement
  • James is the younger brother of Duchess Catherine of Cambridge
  • Donna shared a cryptic message on Instagram amid the claims

They are reported to have separated after a two-and-a-half year relationship.

And, while neither Donna Air nor James Middleton has openly commented on the alleged break-up, the 36-year-old blonde has shared a cryptic post on her Instagram page in the wake of the news.

The model and TV presenter is said to be 'more than a little heartbroken' over the split from the Duchess of Cambridge's brother, and has been lying low in the wake of the separation.

But on Wednesday evening, as the news of the shock split came to light, she shared a poignant message on her social media page.

The former Big Breakfast host posted a snap of an inspirational quote written on a chalk board at her bikram yoga class, appearing to confirm the rumours of a break-up.

It read: 'Accept what is, let go of what was, have faith in what will be (even those itchy ears).'

Her supposedly meaningful image came as it was reported in the national press that Donna's long-term union with James had sadly come to an end.

A source told The Sun: 'The split happened a couple of weeks ago and it was James' decision.

'He just didn't think it was going to go the distance. And I think his family were always very anti her being the future Queen of England's sister-in-law.'

The news comes as something of a surprise since Donna and James were pictured putting on a very loving display in St. Barts just last month.

The pair didn't hold back with, kissing and cuddling openly during their Caribbean getaway with the Middleton family.

The alleged split sadly comes just a few days after Donna's beloved grandmother passed away, for whom she has helped raise over £1.5k in honour of Alzheimer's Society.

TIMELINE OF JAMES AND DONNA'S ROMANCE

February 2013: James and Donna first meet at the exclusive private members’ club No 5 Hertford Street (owned by Robin Birley) in Mayfair, London, and go on a string of dates.

March 2013: Donna takes James as her date to New York socialite Heather Kerzner’s birthday at a top restaurant in Mayfair.

April 2013: James and Donna’s then ‘secret’ romance comes to light, as revealed by The Mail On Sunday.

Late April 2013: The couple make their first appearance in public together, and are spotted hand-in-hand on a date night at LouLou's private members' club in Mayfair.

May 2013: Donna mingles with the royal family, and is seen out at LouLou’s with Princess Beatrice. She is also said to have become close to his sister Pippa.

June 2013: Just months after getting together, engagement rumours swirl after Donna is spotted with a ring on the ring finger of her left hand.

December 2013: More rumours abound, this time claiming that the pair have split after not being spotted together in public for almost two months. They spend Christmas apart, with their repspective families.

January 2014: Donna and James are seen together for the first time in a few months, the two of them meeting up at James’ West London office.

March 2014: James and Donna head off on their first family holiday together, along with Donna’s daughter Freya (whose father is her former partner Damian Aspinall).

August 2014: The pair go away again, to Geneva, Switzerland, along with Freya.

April 2015: The couple head off on an extended break to the United States, which included a trip to Los Angeles. James shares a sweet and rare photo of the two of them together on his Instagram page.

July 2015: A new blow for Donna as it’s claimed she isn’t allowed to go to the Christening of Princess Charlotte, James’ niece.

August 2015: Donna celebrates her 36th birthday in Newcastle with her immediate family, but James is notably absent.

August 2015: Donna accompanies the Middletons on a family holiday to the Caribbean, where they pack on the PDA.

September 2015: James reportedly ends romance with Donna.

James and Donna went public with their romance in 2013, after meeting at Robin Birley's private members' club No 5 Hertford Street in London's Mayfair, but have remained notoriously private throughout their courtship.

Still, they never completely shied away from the cameras at public events, and were first spotted on a date back in April 2013.

The newly-smitten pair were seen walking hand-in-hand to LouLou's in Mayfair for one of their earlier dates, and it was the first confirmation that they were an item.

However, it's thought that James' mother Carole in particular never fully approved of the Newcastle-born single mother, but that remains conjecture.

Asked during an interview to promote his cake-making business last year whether he had considered proposing, James remarked incredulously: 'Am I getting married? What a ridiculous question! Um, we're enjoying our relationship as it is now.'

As for Donna, she hardly ever mentions James by name. And of their relationship, she once commented: 'I don't feel like it is high-profile because James and I don't court publicity.

'We don't have a big showbiz celebrity life in any sense.'

James, 28, has rarely broached the subject of his romance with Donna publicly - apart from that rare interview - and the couple tended to go to great lengths to not be seen out together, apart from at public events.

However, in recent times the couple had indulged in a few choice snaps on social media, with Donna last posting a picture of them together six weeks ago.

In a rare interview in 2013, Donna opened up about their then-burgeoning romance, telling The Mail on Sunday's You magazine: 'James is wonderful, and I enjoy our time together very much.

'I am very happy. It is early days but you just never know what the future has in store.'

She then quipped of her culinary entrepreneur boyfriend,  'And yes... there is also the bonus that he brings something I have always searched for, and will always need in my life... cake!'

Earlier this week, the TV presenter was spotted catching up with her ex-partner, Damian Aspinall, and their daughter, Freya, perhaps taking her mind of the break-up with the help of some quality family time.
