A New Jersey man in prison awaiting trial for the murder of a 73-year-old woman has been declared 'incompetent' after he gouged his two eyes out.

Victor Razumov Jr is accused of the murder in November 2012 of Virginia 'Suzy' Sommer during a robbery in Wantage.

Judge Thomas Critchley, sitting in Sussex County Superior court ordered Razumov to reappear before him on January 16 to allow him time to undergo further psychiatric treatment.

The court heard that Razumov gouged out his eyes during separate incidents while incarcerated at New Jersey State Prison in Trenton.

He was transferred to the Ann Klein Forensic Center for psychiatric treatment.

Razmumov's legal team said they wanted copies of the psychiatric reports being prepared for the court. His lawyer Robert Baer said the expert opinion could help with an insanity or diminished capacity defence.

According to NJ.com, Bayer told the court: 'He just simply is not getting the kind of psychiatric treatment necessary in order for him to be restored.'

Razumov then asked whether he could address the court.

He told Judge Critchley, that he was not a member of the Razumov family and demanded a DNA test. He also claimed that he had legal papers which prove that is is not guilty.

Police caught Razumov as he tried to dispose of jewellery in a pawn shop.

His elder brother Alexey was also arrested at the time. He was accused of driving his brother to the pawn shop. He was charged with with third-degree conspiring to deal in stolen property and third-degree conspiring to receive stolen property.

He is due to face trial once his younger brother's case is settled.

Sommer, a retired nurse who lived about half a mile from Razumov, was found by a family friend who had been unable to reach her on the phone. She had been stabbed several times.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry and that nothing was out of place, and only the jewellry appeared to be missing.

She left behind her three children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her late husband, Bob, had served as mayor of Lafayette.

'She was intelligent and she had a good sense of humor and she'd tell it like it is, you know a hard worker,' her friend Marie Flaumenbaum, 82, told the Sparta Independent after the murder.

'She was a wonderful person. She didn't deserve this.'
