The end of the rugby hard-man! England and Wales players get anti-ageing facials and laser hair removal to look their best for the World Cup

  • Two players have admitted they undergo treatments before a big game
  • These include anti-ageing facials and laser hair removal
  • They are polished, primed and ready for England v Wales this weekend

Facials, waxing and other beauty treatments are no longer the preserve of women and reality stars - now the Britain's toughest sportsmen are taking advantage of the raft of new procedures to make sure they look their best.

Wales’s Dominic Day and England teammate Jonathan Joseph have been enjoying treatments from anti-ageing facials to laser hair removal in time for this weekend's tense Wales-England showdown.

Their metrosexual beauty habits are a sign that rugby's hard-man image is fast becoming a thing of the past.

In the Seventies and Eighties, rugby heroes such as Bill Beamont, Brian Moore and Merv 'The Swerve' Davies, made the broken nose, cauliflower ear and missing tooth look fashionable.

But the game’s image is changing and several England and Wales first team rugby players indulged in a host of beautifying sessions to look their best for the World Cup, especially the tense Wales and England showdown on September 26.

Joseph booked himself in for a course of laser hair removal at Premier Laser Clinic to get rid of the hair on his chest and stomach.

While 6ft 6in, Welsh man Day showed that he is in touch with his feminine side, by having an anti-ageing facial to repair the damage caused by sun beds.

Talking about the change in views on male grooming in rugby, Day said: 'You still get those 1970s type fellas that hang around the club-house, and if they saw something like this, they just wouldn’t get it really.

‘They don’t understand rugby is a professional sport now and you’ve got to look after yourself and that means looking after your appearance as well as your fitness.’

The 30-year-old recently had a Skinbreeze facial at the clinic in Soho, accompanied by his girlfriend, I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’s Nadia Forde.

At £150 per session, the Skinbreeze treatment is 60 minutes long and reduces lines, wrinkles and scars on the face.

It’s a five-stage treatment that begins with a gentle microdermabrasion with LED light therapy, which takes off the top layer of dead skin and kills the bacteria that cause spots.

Then there’s an ozone blaster which deals with any active acne.

The third step is an oxygen infusion of serums that reduce scars, lines and wrinkles and sun damaged skin.

The fourth phase of the treatment is a hydro-mask and lymph drainage massage which gives deep penetrating hydration for the skin with hyaluronic acid.

Then the final stage has a fine mist spray of serum to lock in the hydration on the surface of the skin.

Day’s response to the treatment was: ‘Wow that is amazing, that’s cool that.’

The treatment rejuvenates skin cells with a topical application of vitamin C, which is absorbed through the skin.

England centre Joseph started a course of laser hair removal treatment on September 14 to remove all his chest and stomach hair.

He was told to shave his chest the day before the treatment and that the laser would kill the hairs down at the follicle, preventing re-growth.

Joseph, known to his England teammates as JJ, stripped down to his waist and the laser treatment was tested on him at three levels of intensity.

He opted for the highest level during a 45-minute treatment over two areas on his torso.

JJ said: ‘I need to shave all the time, otherwise it looks awful under clothes otherwise. I've got the top half shaved at the moment.’

A single session of the laser hair removal on the abdomen and chest costs £199, or £597 for six sessions.
