Is this the most hideous handbag EVER? Critics take to social media to slam $2,975 Dolce & Gabbana purse decorated with child-like portrait of a mom and family

  • Dolce & Gabbana's Sicily bag is part of its Fall 2015 Viva La Mamma collection that celebrates motherhood
  • Trend for portraits appearing on handbags hit the mainstream when Kanye West gave wife Kim Kardashian a $40,000 Hermes bag hand-painted with a nude surrealist image
  • Dolce & Gabbana also has a textured iPhone wallet with a similar pattern available for $1,095

The trend of high-fashion handbags incorporating designs that look like they could have been drawn by a third-grader shows no sign of slowing down if Dolce & Gabbana's Fall 2015 line is any indication.

Commenters have taken to social media to decry Dolce & Gabbana's black Sicily bag, which features cutouts of a mother holding the hands of her two daughters, along with a smiling dog and angry cat.

Jezebel used the headline 'The devil has revealed himself in the form of a $2,975 Dolce & Gabbana bag', to describe the purse, which attracted more than 22,000 shares so far, with most readers mocking the design.

While one lamented 'Whatever happened to basic black?', another seemed shocked that the bag existed. 'Oh God it's real. I thought it was a silly graphic but it actually f*****g looks like that,' the commenter wrote, adding: 'Jesus skateboarding Christ.'

Yet another commenter remarked that the bag looked like 'the back window of a minivan'.

Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have said the Viva la Mamma collection is a celebration of motherhood - and an homage to their own mothers.

For the show during Milan Fashion Week, a handful of models stepped onto the catwalk with their children and babies, and heavily-pregnant model Bianca Balti also walked the runway.

The trend for portrait purses arguably hit the mainstream when Kanye West gifted wife Kim Kardashian with an Hermes bag hand-painted by George Condo - whose work hangs in the Guggenheim and Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.

Kim's bag - before the image of the green-headed man and nude women was added - cost around $40,000 minus the portrait.

When Kim shared images of the bag on her Instagram, they soon received more than 188,000 likes and 27,000 comments, including: 'Such a waste of a Birkin bag' from user elenimack and '#epicfail' by jedebough.

For those who can't get enough of the family portraits, Dolce & Gabbana also offers alternatives including a Sicily textured leather phone bag for $1,295 an iPhone wallet for $1,095.
