The leader of the Catholic Church has previously railed about unbridled capitalism that he believes idolizes money over people.

Despite this, he was all smiles as he met President Obama and his family on Wednesday.

The girls took the day off school to meet the Pope on the runway tarmac, with Obama looking proud of his family as they greeted the Vatican leader.

Fourteen-year-old Sasha was wearing a pleated colorblock skirt by Kate Spade, while Malia, 17, paired a short-sleeved black top with a coordinating graphic print skirt that also fell below the knee.

The First family shook the Pope's hand at the start of his five-day U.S. tour, which coincides with the United Nations summit that will see more than 100 world leaders arrive in New York.

Be the First Lady of style in a Carolina Herrera dress like Michelle

It's not every day that someone gets to shake hands with the Pope, but then again Michelle Obama isn't just anyone. The First Lady wore a custom made Carolina Herrera dress to greet the Catholic leader along with a pair of metallic kitten heel pumps.

The demure dress featured a cowl neckline, belted waist and pleated knee length skirt. We can’t get enough of the soft, pastel hue which went quite well with Michelle’s natural makeup and loose curls.

The Venezuelan designer is known for dressing President’s wives and royalty like Queen Letizia of Spain, so we weren’t too surprised that the Mrs. Obama chose a piece from her collection. Click right to get a similar look at Neiman Marcus.

The Argentine-born pontiff comes to the U.S. bearing a message that the power and wealth that Washington symbolizes should be made to serve humanity, and not the other way around.

A line of cardinals, bishops and archbishops stood waiting for the pope alongside crowds and a high school band, playing music in his honor. When the plane finished taxi-ing, and the red carpet was rolled out, everyone fell quiet.

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill were also at the base to greet Francis.

The Pope left Washington on Thursday for New York after speaking at a joint session of Congress.

He spent Thursday evening leading evening prayers at St Patrick's Cathedral ahead of a packed schedule tomorrow, which wiull see the 78-year-old speak at the United Nations, visit a Catholic School in Harlem, lead a parade through central park and give mass in Madison Square Garden.

On Saturday he will fly on to Philadelphia before heading back to Rome on Sunday.
