How birth, privilege and Eton have never mattered more: DOMINIC SANDBROOK says Cameron's antics have revealed the enduring power of class in Britain

David Cameron's antics have revealed power of class in Britain, DOMINIC SANDBROOK writes

David Cameron must be praying that the public are in a forgetful mood as there is a decent chance he will forever be associated with a dead pig's head, writes DOMINIC SANDBROOK. The reason the story has stirred up such a national furore is not just that it sounds so bizarrely lurid, but that it seems, to many people, to capture a deeper truth about British politics today. Forget, if you can, the stuff about the pig. The real point of the story is the fact the Prime Minister once moved - and indeed still moves - in a rarefied world of almost unimaginable privilege, a world of exclusive student societies and Oxford dining clubs, surrounded by old school friends and cut-glass cronies.

Sam and Frances are a tad frosty: Prime Minister's wife said to have 'very different personality' to Chancellor's partner who reportedly feels the 'disparity' between them

David Cameron's Oxford story is nothing compared to today's debauchery

Gathered on the pavement, waiting for a fleet of coaches, stood no fewer than 300 students in fancy dress outfits that had supposedly been inspired by The Roses Of Heliogabalus - a 19th-century Dutch oil painting that depicts a Roman orgy.
