'I ran from the red carpet to see the Pope': Kerry Washington reveals she abandoned her own event to see Pontiff... as she stuns in patterned dress on The Late Show

She was lapping up the acclaim as the centre of attention at her own event.

But Kerry Washington revealed she ran from the red carpet of her own function so she could steal a glimpse of Pope Francis in New York during her appearance on The Late Show on Friday.

She told host Stephen Colbert she could not believe her luck when she discovered the holy man would be driving by a few streets away, and high-tailed it with a few desperate journalists in tow.

Kerry, 38, said: 'I was at an event last night and in the middle of the red carpet I heard some reporters were missing.

'I heard he was three minutes away so I ran away from the red carpet with two crews

'He was driving by Fifth Avenue. I got to see him driving by in his Fiat. It was so exciting.'

Nab a multicolored, textured dress like Kerry

It was Pope mania in New York City this week and even Kerry Washington got caught up in the frenzy. As the city experienced street closures, high security and an abundance of clergy from all faiths, Kerry abandoned her job briefly, a red-carpet appearance, just to get a glimpse of the Pontiff. She told Steven Colbert His Eminence was her "celebrity crush."

We hate to be so shallow but at Fashion Finder, we're all about the clothes, and we have a crush on what Kerry was wearing during her appearance on The Late Show. We love the multicolored, embroidered detail that makes this dress such a standout. It's by London-based designer Saloni Lodha, a line that takes inspiration from her Indian roots. Kerry's exact dress isn't available online, but click right to see the entire collection.

She gave an interview to Extra's Michael Sam during the thrilling moment, and was soon gushing about the head of the Catholic Church.

Clearly fearless of making sweeping statements, she said: 'He’s my celebrity crush, Pope Francis, because he is so generous and such a revolutionary. He is so compassionate.'

Almost as exciting as her story as the outfit Kerry was wearing, with her multicoloured with a green yellow and peach patterned bustier and a skirt which featured rectangular coloured shapes.

Kerry also heaped praise on Stephen's fellow guest, Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, who had wowed the comedian by performing an unfathomable feat of conjuring involving a playing card he selected almost completely at random.

The actress said: 'She is magic. When I was 17, 18 i could not do magic nor did i have Nobel Peace Prize.'

Scandal star Kerry also said that 'every week i feel completely shocked about whats going on,' in the show, and claimed a big cliffhanger was about to come up, though she of course would not share any details.

However she did claim that she can always tell now when Judy Smith, the Alistair Campbell-esque fixer whom her character is based on, gets involved in a real life scandal.

She said: 'I can tell the moment her fingerprint is on it and the spin changes. People handle it completely differently.'

Kerry raised Stephen's eyebrows when he asked her if she does not find it worrying that a person can have that sort of power,  replying, 'For me it doesn't frighten me 'cause shes my friend.'

Even more amusingly, she would not give Stephen any insight on her forthcoming HBO film Confirmation, which goes behind the scenes of the 1991 Clarence Thomas Supreme Court nomination hearings.

She is playing Anita Hill, who accused the future judge of sexual harassment, and she refused to explain what behind shenanigans are exposed in the film, repeatedly saying he would have to watch the movie to find out the answers.
