Lena Dunham shows her casual cool style in a tri-colour sweater while out and about in New York

Her character on Girls is known for her rather drab outfits.

But Lena Dunham showed that she is actually a far cry from Hannah Horvath.

The 29-year-old actress showed her style in a tri-colour sweater while out with gal pal Jenni Konner in New York City on Friday evening.

Lena was a shining star in the dark of night as she wore the cardigan, which resembled the French flag, while painting the town red.

She wore the sweater over a white top, skinny blue jeans and a pair of bright red flat shoes.

The writer, producer and actress showed her eccentric style by accessorising the look with a black leather backpack.

Her short brunette tresses were done up in a messy bun as she sported natural, complimentary make-up with a swipe of  pink lip.

It has been quite the busy week for Lena as the previous day in the Big Apple, she promoted her new email project, LennyLetter.com, on AOL Build

It was a live online interview series hosted by AOL entertainment editorial director Donna Freydkin where fans sit inches away from some of their idols as they answer questions.

Lena was joined by her best friend and Girls producer Jenni, who she is collaborating with on LennyLetter.

The two aim to tackle any and every topic they see fit - from style, health, feminism and politics - one daily email at a time, according to the LennyLetter website.

Both were dressed in black for the live interview, with Lena in a black roll neck jumper, a pleated black mini-skirt and black loafers.

Earlier this week, a promo was released on Politico showing that Lena had the pleasure of sitting down with presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton for an interview.

The former secretary of state, who has been combating sinking poll numbers due to her email scandal, sat down with 29-year-old Girls creator Lena Dunham to help debut Dunham's new feminist newsletter.

In an extended promo for the sit-down , which is set to debut in full on Sept. 29, the former first lady goes on to share: 'You know I'm always a bit puzzled when any woman - whatever her age, but particularly a young woman - says something like: ''Well, I believe in equal rights but I’m not a feminist.'''

The former New York senator explains: 'Well, a feminist is by definition someone who believes in equal rights. I’m hoping that people will not be afraid to say [that they're feminists].'

She adds: 'It doesn’t mean you hate men, it doesn’t you want to separate out the world, so you’re not a part of ordinary life -- that’s not what it means at all!

'It just means that we believe women have the same rights as men - politically, culturally, socially, economically.'
