So how did your £1million gym work out, Ricky? Basement fitness space doubles value of funnyman's London home ... but has he actually been using it?

  • Ricky Gervais added a gym and swimming pool to his London home
  • The basement facilities have more than doubled the value of the property
  • The comedian has now put the house is up for sale for £7.75 million

It cost him £1 million and upset the neighbours, but the gym Ricky Gervais added to the basement of his London house has helped it more than double in value.

But as the property goes on the market, even the comedian’s biggest fans might question how much use he got from the state-of-the-art equipment – especially judging by the gut-bulging poses he jokingly struck at the Golden Globes earlier this year.

The Office creator, 54, bought the Hampstead home for £3.4 million in 2006, then added a gym as well as a swimming pool, sauna and golf simulator, causing noise and disturbance for his neighbours.

Gervais co-owns the mortgage-free property with his long-term partner, producer Jane Fallon, 54.

The couple recently bought a mansion nearby for £10.5 million, a world away from the comic’s working-class roots in a suburb of Reading.

Last night a spokesman for Gervais – who is working on a new film about his Office character David Brent – declined to comment.
