Valparaíso Mayor Jorge Castro and Mayor Fouad El Omari of Tangier have signed a town twinning agreement in Valparaíso that seeks to increase economic and commercial relations, and strengthen cultural ties between the two cities.
The agreement was signed on Oct. 29 at the 3rd international meeting of the Regional Secretariat for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC).
During his address, Mayor El Omari highlighted the geographic and historic similarities between the two port cities and recalled that Chilean painter Claudio Bravo (1936–2011) arrived in Morocco from Spain in early 1972. He settled in Tangier where he purchased a 19th-century mansion, which he restored and adapted for use as a studio and residence. The artist remained in Morocco until his death on June 4, 2011 at his home in Taroudant.
Valparaíso is also twinned with Barcelona (Spain), Bat Yam (Israel), Busan (South Korea), Callao (Peru), Cebu City (Philippines), Córdoba (Argentina), Genoa (Italy), Gwangyang (South Korea), Long Beach (California, USA), Malacca (Malaysia), Mersin (Turkey), Novorossiysk (Russia), Oviedo (Spain), Rosario (Argentina), Salvador (Brazil) and Shanghai (China).
