Chiwetel Ejifor proved he wastes no time when it comes to matters of heart, when he stepped out with a mystery lady at The Martian premiere in New York on Sunday.

The 12 Years A Slave star, 38, was pictured holding hands with the beauty, who was dressed to impress in a red hot number, despite him splitting from his ex Sari Mercer just last month.

Dressed in a checked grey Thom Sweeney suit, the star seemed pretty pleased with himself as he prepared to promote his latest film offering.

MailOnline has contacted a spokesperson for Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The British-Nigerian actor and his Canadian girlfriend Sari Mercer parted ways a matter of weeks ago, according to the Sunday Mirror.

A source told the paper at the time: 'It’s sad but the relationship came to a natural end. Sari was always such a big part of his life so it was definitely a big surprise to hear they had separated.'

Chiwetel plays Vincent Kapoor in The Martian, a movie about astronaut Mark Watney, [Matt Damon] who is presumed dead after a fierce storm.

After being left behind by his crew during a planned mission to Mars, Watney survives but finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet.

With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Meanwhile, Kristen Wiig, 42, and Kate Mara, 32, looked out of this world as the premiere which was held during the 53rd New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall.

Kristen stood out in a plunging strapless dress which cinched her waist and flowed into a voluminous baby blue midi skirt.

While Kate was clad in a short-sleeved black frock featuring a vivid galactic-themed print and black mesh.
