Are the Spice Girls reforming?

For five years, they have not even been in the same room.

So the former Spice Girls are sure to have a lot to catch up on when they meet up for a reunion dinner.

Geri Halliwell, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown and Victoria Beckham are expected to relive the old times at a cosy table for five.

But talking about their memories may not be the only matter on the agenda.

Each Spice Girl could easily justify wanting to swop her relatively so-so solo career for the dizzy heights they reached together as a fivesome.

These days Posh Spice is better known as Mrs Beckham, Mel B's solo career is in the doldrums and Emma Bunton, despite a number one hit, is still waiting to live up to her early promise.

Geri Halliwell, despite her four number ones as a soloist, seems to be concentrating on television these days, with a recent stint on Popstars: The Rivals.

Mel C is regarded as the most successful musically. She has sold three million albums and notched up a string of top ten hits.

The girls have not all been together since May 1998, when Miss Halliwell, now 30, walked away from the group leaving the other four to carry on.

But their differences seem to have disappeared. Yesterday their agents and friends confirmed a meeting was due to take place but refused to say where or when.

It is thought they could see each other as early as tonight at the Beckhams' £2.5million Hertfordshire home.

Insiders said the meeting was instigated by Victoria who has been eager to see all her old friends back together. There is also talk of releasing a greatest hits CD.

During their heyday the Spice Girls notched up nine number one hits, including three Christmas chart toppers. Each is said to have earned up to £20million.

Rumours that a reunion was imminent have been circulating for months. However the chances of them performing again together are said to be remote. Last September it was reported that Scary Spice Mel B, 27, had kicked off discussions.

She was said to be desperate after her solo career nose-dived.

She has been dropped by her record label Virgin and is trying to establish herself as an actress and TV presenter.

Baby Spice Emma Bunton, 27, was also dropped by Virgin but has bounced back with a single due in May and a £1.5million album deal with Universal on the cards.

Posh Spice, 28, is married to England captain David Beckham and makes millions from advertising. She recently signed a record deal with Telstar after she too was dumped by Virgin. Just a few days ago, Melanie Chisholm, the 29-year-old former Sporty Spice, appeared to rule out a reunion performance. She claimed their fans were too old.

'I would only consider it if I was completely broke,' she said. 'It is a really bad idea really. Our original audience has gone.'
