Forget fall, Fairbanks, Alaska receives more than six inches of snow - their heaviest for September in 23 years

The calendar may show fall, but it looks as though winter has arrived early in Alaska.

6.7 inches of snow covered the city of Fairbanks on Friday recording its first measurable snow of the season.

It was also the Alaskan city's third heaviest September snow day on record with the last winter wallop coming in 1992.

The National Weather Service reported that Fairbanks International Airport got 6.7 inches of snow, breaking the previous daily record - 0.8 inches in 1996.'It's a little early for this,' National Weather Service meteorologist Don Aycock said to the Alaska Dispatch.For much of the day, it was a wintry scene in Fairbanks.'The airport reported the first flake at 6 a.m.,' Aycock said.

By 2:30 p.m., 4-9 inches of snow had been measured across the Tanana Valley.

Around 7:30 p.m., city spokeswoman Amber Courtney reported conditions on city streets were 'slushy,' but had improved with evening sunshine.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that the Friday snow and slush slowed traffic. 

Police say there were several minor crashes, including one that knocked over a light pole.

National Weather Service forecasters say most areas in town received around 5 inches of snow, while areas further off had as much as 9 inches by 5 p.m. Friday. 

Although much of the snow has melted away, it's a chilly start to fall with temperatures forecast to remain in the 40s all week.
