Defender Gareth Bale admits Tottenham are still coming to terms with their disappointing opening day defeat at Middlesbrough.

The Carling Cup holders had high hopes of breaking into the top four after investing heavily in the summer.

But Juande Ramos' side went down 2-1 at the Riverside and Bale admitted: 'It might have knocked our confidence.

'We know we are good enough – we just need to get that win in the premier league and that will kick-start our season.'

Winless Spurs are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League with two points from seven games -  their worst start to a league campaign since 1912.
