Charlize Theron was looking bright and beautiful, and her message was powerful.

The 40-year-old actress spoke about the effect AIDS had on her life growing up in South Africa and she's working to eradicate the dreaded disease during a visit to the Today show in New York City on Monday.

Charlize made her point clear while standing out in a long and ruffled color-paneled frock with a chic black blazer and strapping heels.

Charlize Theron, in New York City on Monday for an appearance at the Today Show, cut a beautiful swath in a black blazer, lace-up leather high-heels and a geometric colorblock dress.

The blonde beauty looked incredibly stunning as she sat down with her attentive hosts, her short-cropped hair shining.

Charlize grew serious when discussing the disturbing statistics about HIV/AIDS and young women in her native country of South Africa, stressing that 'we've become complacent.'

'When I was growing up (in South Africa) in the late '80s and early '90s an epidemic really hit and we had little information on it,' Charlize revealed.

'We're not going to stop AIDS until we teach people how not to become positive,' Charlize said. 'This is an infectious disease. You can't curb that. We have to stop it. We have to eliminate it completely.

'In the western world, we've come so far. We don't see AIDS on the front page of the newspaper anymore. The problem is we've become complacent, and the problem is right now more young girls are dying.

Charlize laughed and said, in a baby voice that might have sounded like her daughter's, 'Where's my bottle?'

The Prometheus star - who ended her engagement to actor-director Sean Penn in June - also adopted son Jackson in March of 2012.

In 2008 the Oscar-winning actress was named a United Nations Messenger Of Peace.

She also made an appearance on Sunday at the United Nations for a panel on Ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

Following her appearance on NBC's Today show, Charlize a snap taken on the morning show's set.

'Talking #Ctaop and the work we do to end aids for adolescents this morning on @todayshow #genendit,' Charlize wrote.
