R'n'B singer Chris Brown is having problems getting his Australian visa application approved
Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce has weighed in on the controversy surrounding R'n'B singer Chris Brown's Australian visa application, revealing it is causing tensions between him and his daughters.
The hip hop star is reportedly set to be banned from entering the country and has been given just 28 days to plead his case following his assault conviction for beating up ex-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.
Speaking about domestic violence on ABC's Q&A program on Monday night, Mr Joyce said he agreed with the stance to ban the singer, despite joking about his daughters urging for Brown to get the green light from immigration officials so he could perform in December.
'This is an argument I have with my daughters who want him to come in, God help us,' Mr Joyce said as he laughed.
'But he has served five years probation in the US. We have said that we have an intent not to let him in. He now has to prove he is worthy of coming in the door.'
Journalist David Marr opened up the discussion as he described Brown's assault as 'completely foul and horrible'.
'The question is, are we going to start making examples of musicians because they do things to which everybody in this room would find distasteful?'
'But I'm not sure if Australia does much good for itself or for the cause of domestic violence, by making these kinds of judgments.'
Museum of Contemporary Art director Elizabeth Ann MacGregor said she believed the singer did not 'pass the character test' in response to the denial of Brown's visa.
'I'm all for setting examples and saying we will not accept this kind of behaviour,' she said.
'But having said that, I don't know where we're going to draw the line. What happens if countries reciprocate and some of our sports players go overseas? It's not going to be pretty, is it?

'So I think we, maybe need to get our own house in order before we start banning other people.'
Despite having less than a month to appeal the decision within the 28-day time frame, tickets for his gig have gone on sale for up to $600-a-pop.
His manager Mike G also took to Instagram to try to quash rumours the Australian government had rejected his visa application ahead of his planned tour later this year.
'The request is currently being considered by the office of the Immigration Minister,' Mike G said in an Instagram post, adding that: 'Contrary to media reports Chris Brown's request to enter Australia on tour has not been denied'.
The American star is scheduled to play four shows; in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, as well as taking the stage at the Vector Arena show on December 18 in Auckland.
