A pregnant mother and a grandmother have been killed and three others, including an 11-month-old baby, injured in a drive-by shooting in Chicago.

The 'innocent' group had been returning from a family outing on Monday night when the shooting occurred on the city's southwest side, Chicago police said.

Deputy Chief Eugene Roy said the women killed were the mother and grandmother of the wounded infant.

Relatives identified Patricia Chew as one of the victims.

The mother of 11-month-old Princeton was two months pregnant, Eyewitness News reported.

Roy says the five were exiting a car late in the evening when shots were fired from another vehicle in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

He said: 'You have an innocent family coming home from a family outing.

'Somebody opens fire on two women, a child, and two adults, killing the mother of the 11-month-old and the grandmother of the 11-month-old.

The two women were taken to Stroger Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Police have no suspects in custody and are searching for the shooter.

Roy added that the infant, who was also taken to hospital, is now in stable condition with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Two officers who arrived at the scene soon after the shooting made the quick decision to not wait for an ambulance.

They took the baby to hospital in their patrol car, where the boy received a CAT scan.

The relationship between the two male victims and the dead women and baby was not immediately clear.

Roy said one was in critical condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital, and other suffered injuries that are not life-threatening.

Chicago, like many other major cities in the United States, has experienced a surge in shootings this year.
