Ellen, 28, has worked on producing the film since 2008m which is based on the true story of a dying New Jersey police detective who struggles to transfer her earned pension to her long-time domestic partner.

However she was moved by the plot.

The film is based on a 2008 documentary which chronicles Detective Lieutenant Laurel Hester (Moore) as she fights for equality and protection for her domestic partner, Stacie Andree (Page).

Julieanne's character is dying from stage IV lung cancer and only has months to live as she fights for her partner to receive the same rights as those in heterosexual relationships.

'Laurel is a hero because she demanded to be treated like everybody else,' she explained. 'She was a police detective and believed in the law enforcement and the justice system.'

'I just feel so grateful to be a part of telling Laurel and Stacie's story,' Ellen said.

'Then as she's dying is being denied her rights and because she's in a relationship with a woman.'

The Oscar-winner, 54, has been married to director Bart Freundlich since 2003 and the couple have two children together.

'We have a very solid family life, and it is the most satisfying thing I have ever done,' she revealed to Harper's Bazaar.
