Crown Princess Mary cut an elegant figure in an ornate burgundy gown and family jewels for new portraits released by the Danish royal court.

The mother-of-four, who was pictured alongside her husband Crown Prince Frederik, is known for her graceful style.

The velvet dress is in keeping with her modest, yet classic approach to fashion with a fitted bodice, cinched waist and full-length sleeves.

Mary paired the full-length gown with the opulent Ruby Parure Tiara that swept her brunette locks away from her face.

The tiara belonged to Queen Ingrid, Prince Frederik's grandmother, and is part of a set that includes a necklace, earrings, brooch and a ring.

Around her neck Mary wore a string of diamonds and rubies that complemented the rich colour of her dress.

She teamed the necklace with matching drop earrings and a waisted velvet belt adorned with a jewelled brooch.

Mary wore the Order of the Elephant on a soft blue sash that crossed her body from her right shoulder to her left hip.

The Order of the Elephant can be traced back to 1460, and is Denmark's oldest and most distinguished royal order of chivalry.

On the New Year's Eve banquet held January 1, the Order of the Elephant is instead worn on across the chest on a chain-link collar.

The photos were taken at the appointment of Crown Prince Frederik to Rear Admiral of the Navy and to Major General of the Army and Air Force in Copenhagen.
