Murdered: Police say Robert Bosso was shot dead after being robbed by three to five men at his apartment complex on Saturday night

A former Lockheed engineer died protecting his girlfriend from masked attackers in a robbery at his Orlando apartment.

Robert Bosso wrestled a gun away from oneof the men holding it to the head of his partner and told her to run after the gang of thugs invaded his home, his father said.

The woman fled and was seeking help from a neighbor at the Kirkman Road apartment, Valencia when she heard the unmistakable sound of a gunshot.

When she returned. Bosso was dead.

'He was courageous and a wonderful guy, a devout Catholic,' his father Bill Bosso told the Orlando Sentinel.

'He was a wonderful child. We are going to miss him.'

Police responding to the shooting at the Verona at Valencia Park Apartments at about 11pm on Saturday arrived to find Bosso dead in the parking lot.

Homicide detectives at the scene said between three to five men wearing dark clothes robbed Bosso before shooting him, reports WFTV.

'There is a witness to the incident who is currently being interviewed by detectives,' Lt. Darron Esan told The Orlando Sentinel on Saturday night.

Bosso had lived at the gated apartment complex, near Valencia College's West Campus, for several years and liked it for its apparent lack of crime.

The former Lockheed Marin engineer was just days away from starting a new job when the tragic incident occurred.

Bosso had just returned from dinner with his girlfriend of a year-and-a-half, whom he met through his religious background, when he was confronted by the masked men.

The 28-year-old was able to snatch a gun being held up to his partner's head and wrestle the attacker to the floor.

Sadly, the Florida engineer, with a master's degree from UCF, was then shot and killed in the tussle.

Resident Keith McKenzie who moved to the gated community (pictured) for safety says he's absolutely shocked to hear about Bosso's death. 'It's crazy, I just moved here three months ago,' he said. 'I moved here for gated communities and stuff like that, and it's a travesty that we have violence like this around here.'

Bosso's heartbroken mother told The Orlando Sentinel that she got a call from her son's girlfriend at 4:30 am on Sunday telling her that her son was dead.

'He had just come back from dinner with his girlfriend,' Cynthia Bosso said.

'I know that Orlando has crime and stuff happening, but this wasn't a bad area. It was across the street from Valencia College, down from Universal. This was a big apartment complex, huge.'

Cynthia said her son was meant to visit her on Monday to tell him about his new job in Boca Raton.

She said she didn't know very much about the new job but that her son had told her he wanted to dedicate his life to helping people.

'He was going to do something different with his life,' she said. 'He wanted to help people.'

Cynthia said her son was a, 'very religious, a good person,' and that he was 'never violent, never drank.'

'It's horrible. I don't know why someone would kill him. I just don't understand it. He was just 28 years old. He had everything going for him,' said Cynthia.

Jeffrey Via said that he's seen people get through the locked off gates fairly frequently.

'We do notice frequently a lot of people run the gates or hold the gates open for people, so we try to do our best to be proactive and tell people when we see them running the gates or holding them open,' said resident Jeffrey Via.

Valencia College has issued a safety warning to its students after the nearby fatal shooting.

Spokeswoman Carol Traynor told the Orlando Sentinel: 'We advise students to stay alert, report suspicious activity, walk in groups, call Campus Security for an escort when walking alone on campus at night, and stay in areas that are well lit.

'We also have yellow call boxes located in strategic areas with emergency call buttons for reporting imminent threats.'
