From a Pimm's at Wimbledon to a Tim Tam in Sydney: Meet the Instagram celebrity who's seen - and eaten - it all as she chews her way around the world

  • Indonesian designer Melissa Hie has more than 177,000 followers
  • She has spent 16 months sampling local dishes around the world
  • Posts include 238 pictures of food found in 31 countries

There’s no shame in choosing a holiday destination based purely on its food options.

Whether it’s heading to Germany in time for Oktoberfest, or over to Japan to sample some sushi, trips abroad and eating out go hand in hand for blogger Melissa Hie.

Or, in this case, food goes in one hand, a camera goes in the other.

GIRL EATS WORLD

Melissa Hie's Girl Eats World Instagram account has racked up more than 177,000 followers since it launched in May 2014.

Originally from Indonesia but living in Singapore, the page owner has already visited 31 countries.

Posts include 238 pictures which have an average of 8,000 likes each.

The popular page started after a friend insisted on taking a picture of Melissa in front of the Colosseum in Rome.

Melissa said: 'Serena insisted on taking my picture in front of the Colosseum while I insisted on eating my sandwich because I was too hungry.

‘The resulting picture was me pigging out in front of an iconic background.

‘Since then, I thought about doing a collection of pictures like that - of me eating in front of famous places.

'But the next time I went to Europe I was by myself and a bit shy about asking strangers to take a picture of me.

‘So I took the food pictures by myself.’

The online account, which currently has 238 posts, proved an instant success, with Melissa gaining 7,000 followers in the account’s first week.

Her most-liked posts are Hello Kitty themed, but Melissa says pho in Vietnam and onigiri in Japan are her favourite meals.

Melissa said: ‘I choose whatever food piques my curiosity or looks tasty. Then the location comes later.

‘Usually it’s just local food with an iconic location, since I like to tell a story about the place I visited through food or the location itself.’

‘I have definitely received strange stares from people when I am taking pics for Girl Eat World.

‘I look pretty funny when I do it! I felt pretty self-conscious at first.

‘These days I care less about what people think and just take my shot, since it’s likely I won’t see them again.’

Fans are already hoping Melissa will now land a book deal but she says she currently has no major plans for Girl Eat World.

Melissa added: ‘For now I will just continue doing what I love to do – eating local food and taking pictures.’
