The monarchs were at the palace to meet with the communication media of FAD - a drug awareness organisation of which Sofia is honorary president.

Letizia donned a pale tweed skirt and jacket with lace detailing for the occasion, teamed with a simple belt that cinched her tiny waist, and wore her chestnut bob sleek and straight.

Queen Sofia wore a sharply tailored jacket worn over a brown and cream dotted dress which fell just below the knee.

Both Sofia, wife of King Juan Carlos of Spain who abdicated in July 2014, and Letizia, a mother-of-two, are considered to be two of the most stylish European royals; wearing ensembles which often win plaudits from the Spanish press.

Sofia's eldest daughter Infanta Elena has two children Felipe, 17, and Victoria, 14, with ex-husband Jaime de Marichlar.

Infanta Cristina has four children: Miguel, 13, Pablo, 14, Juan, 15, and Irene, ten.

Sofia accessorized her outfit with gold hoop earrings, a necklace and a glimmering brooch, while Letizia kept it simple with just a pair of earrings

The youngest member of the family is Letizia's husband King Felipe, and the couple have two daughters Leonor, ten, and Sofia, eight.

Letizia was last recently seen out about about with Felipe as they attended the inaugural performance of the new season at Madrid's Royal Theatre last week.

The elegant monarch showed off the results of a relaxing summer in the Spanish sun, as well as her much-discussed biceps, in a chic black cocktail dress.

She teamed the simple look with a pair of black heels, a clutch and wore her hair in a low up-do.

Felipe looked dapper in a double-breasted suit with a white shirt and blue and red patterned tie. Still sporting his clean-shaven look, he doesn't appear to be ready to embrace a beard again.

The couple caught the premiere performance of Roberto Devereux by Gaetano Donizetti.

The opera, a Welsh National Opera production, has fittingly royal themes, focused around Elizabeth I's love for the Earl of Essex and her duty to the country.

The Teatro Royal theatre's website notes that the work is a 'psychological and religious profile of the queen trapped in a suffocating network of dysfunctional relationships: her young lover, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, is in love with Sara, Duchess of Nottingham.'

The monarch's attendance at the event was another sign that it's back to work for the Spanish royals after a long summer and the day previous, Letizia went back to the classroom to inaugurate the new academic year.

The week before she joined her husband King Felipe VI in St. Augustine, Florida, as the former capital city of Spanish Florida celebrated its 450th anniversary.

Arm in arm with King Felipe, 47, she toured the centuries-old Castillo de San Marcos fort, which was designed by a Spanish engineer.

America's first city, St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by a Spanish admiral named Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who later became Florida's first governor.

It was named after the feast day of St. Augustine, which happened to be the day that passengers on Pedro's ships first set eyes on the town.

Celebrating the city's 450th anniversary, King Felipe VI delivered a speech from the King’s Balcony of the Government House, overlooking the Plaza de la Constitución. He and Letizia were joined by a man who was dressed up as Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in a black-and-red period costume.

Felipe and Letizia are only the second Spanish royal couple to visit the city since it was founded four and a half centuries ago.

King Felipe VI's father, King Juan Carlos I and his mother, Queen Sofia, made a trip there in 2001.

As part of their US tour, the pair also visited Washington, D.C., where they were welcomed by President and Michelle Obama.

They attended a glamorous soiree at Capitol Hill alongside senators Tim Caine and John Barrasso.

The perennially chic Letizia chose to give a sartorial nod to her host in sparkling $5,095 Nina Ricci, which is a Spanish label adored by Michelle Obama, that showed off her slender shoulders and helped showcase her dangling diamond chandelier earrings.

Earlier, the Spanish royal couple had been given a formal welcome at the White House by the Obamas, with Mrs Obama giving Letizia a tour of her famous organic garden.
