From houndstooth (as modelled by the Duchess of Cambridge) to Ellie Goulding's favourite tartan: The top trends for autumn/winter you NEED to know about

  • Latest trends revealed on catwalks of New York, London and Milan
  • Red is colour of the season while Seventies style revival continues
  • Traditional looks like tartan and houndstooth are given a modern twist

Designers have been showcasing their latest looks on the catwalks of New York, London and Milan this month revealing the top trends for the season.

But you don’t need to have had a seat on the Frow to find out what you should be wearing to keep up with the fashion pack.

Here we reveal the top trends for this Autumn/Winter and how you can pull them off with the help of fashion brand F&F…

RAINBOW FAUX FUR

If you want to feel warm and fuzzy this winter then wear something warm and fuzzy – namely a shaggy faux fur coat. The cosy coats are going to be the hippest outerwear this season and have already been seen on reality star Kim Kardashian, model Lily Donaldson and actress Sienna Miller.

The use of fur has long been a controversial one in the fashion industry but it seems some designers aren’t going to shy away from it and have gone for even bigger and bolder with the look this year.

Multi-coloured fur designs have all been included in the autumn/winter collections of Gucci, Matthew Williamson and Louis Vuitton, creating a standout, striking look.

Even long-term animal rights campaigner Stella McCartney has included faux fur in her autumn/winter collection – but she is keen to stress you can get the look without causing cruelty. She has created a number of long-haired, fluffy synthetic coats that look just as glamorous as the real thing and has been pictured going out to dinner in one of her own designs - a furry black jacket with a £1,100 price tag.

For a high street version, check out F&F’s Monochrome Faux Fur Patchwork Jacket for £39. The jacket is in a chic and eye-catching black and white two-tone style. It is made from modacrylic and acrylic with a polyester backing – so like Stella, you can look fab in ‘fur free fur’ without a guilty conscience.

FIFTY SHADES OF RED

Fifty shades of grey is so last year - in 2015/16, it’s all about red.

Whether it’s letterbox, scarlet or crimson, the colour can suit all skin types and hair shades and was a prominent feature on the runways of Fendi, MaxMara and Oscar de la Renta.

Bold, bright reds are made for standing out of the crowd so if you want to turn heads at an office Christmas party, go for a letterbox red dress over a LBD.

Actress Dakota Johnson – of Fifty Shades fame – ensured she was up to date by wearing a maroon dress to a Milan Fashion Week show last week.

The more muted red shade of maroon works well for a smart, evening look and is also ideal for officewear.

For a garment that could be dressed up or down to take you from the office to after work drinks, try F&F's Gold Trim Kimono Dress, £20.

If you don’t want to go all out in red this season, then the shade is also perfect for adding pops of colour to otherwise plain outfits – such as wearing bright red shoes and matching lipstick with a black dress or accessorising a grey suit with a scarlet handbag.

TARTAN TAKEOVER

Such is the popularity of plaid this season, interior designer Scot Meacham Wood declared to the LA Times that 'tartan is the new black.'

For Wood, that means checks are going to be everywhere from throws and pillows to lampshades, but fashionsitas can get the look thanks to designers including Miu Miu, Marni and Alexander McQueen all heavily featuring plaid in recent collections.

The style can be worn ostentatiously with shirts, dresses, skirts and jackets completely checked, or more subtly with just panels of clothes or accessories in plaid print. Wood believes the rise in popularity is thanks in part to the success of TV show Outlander and because it is evocative and versatile.

He said: ‘There's a kind of masculine, militaristic, very muscular aspect to plaid but it also has a very romantic side - inspiring beautiful images of wind-swept moors and heather. It can feel incredibly romantic and feminine as well.’

As Pippa Middleton and Ellie Goulding know, the easier way to incorporate checks into your wardrobe (unless you are Scottish and wear a kilt!) is a checked shirt like F&F's checked shirt, £12.

The shirt can look smart but casual when wore with skinny jeans or as chart-topper Ellie recently demonstrated, more glamorous when worn with a mini skirt. For a look that's more suitable for work, wear it with black trousers or a longer length skirt.

SOPHISTICATED BOHO

Being bohemian was once about being unconventional but in 2015, it’s a firm trend and one worth following if you want to look fashionable and stylish.

The look has been perfected at Burberry, where creative director Christopher Bailey set the standard with the prorsum collection featuring floaty peasant girl dresses, patchwork skirts and folk-inspired patterns in blouses and ponchos.

Pretty boho prints and maxi dresses conjure up a summery, festival look, especially when paired with gladiator sandals or flip flops. Make it work for autumn and winter with patterns in darker shades of red, brown and orange, such as F&F Floral Print Tie Neck Dress, £20, which has flattering Seventies-inspired floaty sleeves.

Forget the sandals and be better prepared for the winter by pairing it with knee high or ankle boots.- which also makes the look more edgy and modern.

Actress Anna Friel recently proved how to pull off a sophisticated but free-spirited boho look work on the red carpet when she looked glamorous in a full-length boho print dress by Vilshenko at a London Fashion Week dinner.

As her vintage-inspired dress was tailored and figure-hugging with a pleated skirt, rather than a billowing long-length maxi, it gave her a boho vive with a modern twist.

You can also work the trend into hairstyling too – braids worn down were another boho look for summer but small plaits and braids tied up into an updo create a glamorous look for the winter party season.

HOUNDSTOOTH

Houndstooth had a surge in popularity in the thirties thanks to Dior, Chanel and Vuitton making it the design for the affluent upper classes to be seen in and was de rigour again in the Sixties.

Now stars like Taylor Swift and Cara Delevingne are making the look more modern by wearing the pattern in vibrant shades.

Ralph Lauren is leading the current charge to revive the traditional black and white print with this latest collection using it in everything from shoes to handbags.

He's been given the royal seal of approval after style icon Duchess of Cambridge wore a Ralph Lauren £1,245 houndstooth shirt dress this month to her first engagement since the birth of Princess Charlotte.

She ensured her outfit looked chic and modern by pairing the monochrome dress with black stilettos and a skinny black belt.

If you don’t feel as confident as Kate to wear houndstooth head to toe, than try incorporating it into your outfit via accessories, such as shoes and bags or in a scarf.

Or to be really up-to-date, try wearing it incorporated in another 2015 trend – the cape. F&F have a monochrome hooded cape for £25 that includes houndstooth to create a modern fusion of graphic prints.

The thigh length knitted cape is idea for layering in autumn/winter and complements the seasonal orange and red colours.

PRETTY PARKAS

A number of trends popular in the past are making a return this season but if you don’t want to look like you’re stuck in a time warp or style rut, you need to wear them with a modern twist.

Take the parka jacket, it became the uniform of Quadrophenia and The Who fans in the Seventies and then had a Brit Pop revival in the Nineties thanks to the likes of Liam Gallagher and All Saints.

Now it is back with a modern, more feminine twist as seen on the catwalks of Roberto Cavalli and Ryan Lo. They’ve made the masculine parka more beautiful by adding floral motifs and gold detailing while also designing it in vibrant shades of yellow and orange, in additional to the traditional khaki.

Kate Hudson shows just how flattering, current and pretty the parka can look when she recently wore one for a flight from NYC, pairing it with fringed boots and a fedora. If you'd like to recreate her look, F&F have a Faux Fur Trim Hooded Parka for £45

The coat has function front pockets perfect for securely carrying modern essentials like your mobile phone. The hood makes it practical for rainy days with the trim fits another of the autumn trends thanks to using faux fur.
