It's Sharknado...with dogs! Kelly Rutherford protects her family from cantankerous canines in new film Night Of The Wild

They are man's faithful best friend who stick with their owners through thick and thin.

But something snaps for the canine residents of a small American town when they go on the rampage in the trailer for new SyFy film Night Of The Wild, which is the latest project by the makers of Sharknado.

Kelly Rutherford is shown playing a mother protecting her daughter from a fuming family pet, which then bursts through a window and attacks.

The terrifying scene begins with family pet Max looking might disgruntled after being locked outside.

His angry growls lead Kelly's character to tell her young daughter, 'We need to make sure all the windows and doors are locked.'

But this is not enough in the end, for the cantankerous canine leaps through a window and is then shown dragging the Gossip Girl favourite along by the arm, a move that is sure to leave stains in her domestic goddess character's perfectly polished wooden floor.

Things start of cheerfully enough in the trailer, with Kelly's character warning her daughter about sticking her fingers inside a cage containing some puppies.

She tells her girl: 'Hey, be careful your fingers, they've got their sharp little teeth in.'

But things soon go from bad to worse, with all of the pooches in their sleepy American small town soon succumbing to a major dose of bad temper.

Fired Real Housewives Of New York City personality Jill Zarin is shown telling a friend in a cafe her adorable toy dog has been 'acting a little strange today.'

But she still seems in denial, as when the woman complains her animal has snapped at her, she replies, 'What do yoy mean she bit you,' even though it happened before her very eyes.

The Vampire Diaries star Tristin Mays seems to be the heroine of the piece, and she is shown fighting off

Furious furballs with a hunting knife when she and a gang of friends are attacked during a hike.

Later Jill, who is shown with a facial injury, tells her, 'We're all gonna die you know.'

The film is made by Sharknado producers Asylum and premieres at 9pm Saturday on SyFy
