Posing for a series of striking images, shot by Tung Walsh for the magazine, Cheryl shows off her chic sense of style in a number of colourful looks.

While the cover image shows the former Girls Aloud star in rock star mode with a leather jacket draped around her shoulders and a gold mini dress underneath, the inside shots have a more retro vibe.

One full-length pic sees the Geordie beauty styled in a stunning black flared jumpsuit with a bold colour splash on the front, while another shot shows Cheryl posing up a storm in a figure-hugging psychedelic catsuit.

The style chameleon is also dressed in a coordinating polka dot shirt and trousers finished with gold as she stares down the camera lens.

While Cheryl looks full of confidence in the gorgeous shoot, she admits in the accompanying interview that the recent speculation over her weight loss has made her angry.

'It's crazy double standards. You'd never be allowed to say to somebody, "Oh, you look a bit fat." And being overweight is unhealthy – it's actually a bad message to tell someone who is obese that they look "curvy" or "great",' she points out. 'But you know what? After this length of time, there's nothing I can hear about myself that I haven't already heard.'

Cheryl first sparked concern among her fans when she was pictured looking slimmer than ever at the X Factor auditions this summer.

But after one of her followers referred to her as a 'bag of bones', the pop princess quickly hit back on Instagram and revealed she was grieving the death of her father-in-law.

The interview also sees the star open up on her marriage to husband Jean-Bernard, with the couple celebrating their first year of marriage back in July after a whirlwind three month romance.

Asked what it's like to be married to her, Cheryl, who divorced footballer Ashley Cole in 2010, is adamant that she's 'low maintenance' but admits that 'maybe I'm deluded. I know my environment isn't easy - my day gets planned out in advance all the time, so I'm like "Oh, actually change that. We can't meet tonight."'

The star adds that she and her French husband, who she is keen to keep out of the limelight, do argue, but she's learned to resolve any issues calmly.

'Well, I'm not a sulker; I've learnt how to express my feelings in a calm way, even if I do want to shout. And if I shout? You know it's bad. But I save it for the big things – I never lose it over the toilet seat being left up,' she explains.

The star also chats about the other man in her life, her X Factor boss and close friend Simon Cowell. Cheryl admits in the interview that the pair's relationship was severely strained after he fired her from the US version of the X Factor back in 2011, but since the pair reunited for the UK show their friendship is better than ever.

'I never thought his decision was wrong; I just thought how he handled it was wrong,' she explains of the 2011 drama. 'There's way to do it, you know what I mean? You've got to face up to these things. We didn't speak for months a lot of hard work had to be done – but I think it stems from Simon being a really soft-heated person deep down. As ballsy as his decisions are, he finds it hard to say it to your face sometimes. But he knows he was in the wrong now.'

As for the new series of the ITV show, which kicks off its live shows next month with new judging lineup Cheryl, Simon, Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw, the feisty star reckons she's a force to be reckoned with.

'I'm going to be tougher this year,' Cheryl tells the mag.

'I'm like a sponge and I'm too sensitive. It was making us ill with stress and worry. People think, "Oh, she's sitting there in a pretty dress," but I get so wrapped up in the arguments that the contestants are having. It affects me.'
