'I'm a cool kid now!' Lea Michele's geeky Scream Queens character gets a haute couture makeover

In the pilot of Ryan Murphy's much-anticipated horror comedy Scream Queens Lea Michele arrived as awkward pledge Hester, one of the many unwanted newcomers Kappa Kappa Tau sorority was forced to accept by Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis).

However, by episode two the neck brace-wearing, unfashionable underling of sorority president Chanel (Emma Roberts) had won herself a makeover, swapping out colorful cat T-shirts for couture.

The 29-year-old discussed the transformation with Variety, gushing: 'I’m a cool kid! I’ve never been one of the cool kids before.'

The makeover came as Chanel realized that while she couldn't change the Dean's mind, she could help save her sorority's plummeting stock by fixing the image of her awkward new members.

Therefore, when she found Hester snooping around in her closet she decided to pry off the neck brace - ignoring any medical necessity - and become her fairy godmother.

Chanel painted her face in similar make-up and dressed her in her own high-fashion looks while adding Hester (who refers to Chanel as 'Mom' as a term of endearment) to her clique of minions (simply called Chanel # 1, 2, 3, etc.).

Later in the episode, Chanel presented her masterpiece - who sported some serious crazy eyes - to the rest of the sorority, at which time the newly-dubbed 'Chanel # 6' gushed: 'My muscles have atrophied and the pain from not wearing my brace has me on the verge of passing out, but I’ve never been happier in my whole life!'

Big surprise: The rest of the sorority was shocked as Chanel (Emma Roberts, L) presented a neck brace-free Hester (Lea, R) in a stunning, strapless white gown

During the scene, Lea emerged dramatically down a spiral staircase in a fitted, strapless white gown with a cinched waist and silver embellishments along the sweetheart neckline.

It fell to a flowing skirt, and she accessorized the couture look with bejeweled and fur-lined bracelets, a furry, white clutch, and strappy, studded heels.

Her previously wavy brown tresses were styled straight and pulled back into a half up, half down look similar to that of the (spoiler alert) recently deceased Chanel # 2, played by Ariana Grande.

Her protege: Even though Lea said she was thrilled to be playing a 'cool kid' for once, she also gushed 'What I love more than anything is that it’s not that she gets a makeover, but that she’s still as weird'

Talking with Variety, Lea shared that she had discussed her character's makeover with creator Ryan, and loved that the style upgrade didn't change who she was at heart.

'What I love more than anything is that it’s not that she gets a makeover, but that she’s still as weird,' she said of Hester, despite getting to share scenes with the Chanels (Emma, Abigail Breslin, Billie Lourde).

'Here’s this girl who goes from wearing a neck brace and being a complete misfit and outcast, but she’s still herself. She gets more weird and mysterious and crazy as the season goes on,' Lea teased.

The former Glee star had taken to Twitter ahead of the episode to tease the big change, writing: 'It's almost @ScreamQueens time!!!!! I'm so excited for tonight's episode!!!! Something very exciting happens to #Hester #HesterisMom.'
