The second-highest-ranking Republican in the Indiana House of Representatives abruptly stepped down Tuesday - one week after a sexually explicit video was sent from his cell phone.

Rep Jud McMillin, a married father of four from Brookville, released a statement saying he was resigning to spend more time with his family.

The 38-year-old lawmaker served as the House majority leader in this year’s legislative session, during which he was a prominent supporter of the religious objections law and efforts to shift authority away from the Democratic state schools superintendent.

A week ago, several people received a cryptic text message from McMillin that read: 'My phone was stolen 24 hours ago in Canada. I have just been able to reactivate it under my control. Please disregard any messages you received recently. I am truly sorry for anything offensive you may have received,' reported the Indianapolis Star.

REP JUD MCMILLIN'S FULL RESIGNATION STATEMENT

'The opportunity to serve the 68th district has been one of the greatest honors of my life. However, after five years of dedicated service I have decided the time is right for me to pass the torch and spend more time with my family.

'I hope that the work I have done in Indianapolis and in Southeastern Indiana has made the state and the communities I represent a better place. Now I want to focus all of my attention on making my family’s world a better place.'

It is possible that McMillin may have sent the message in a bid to minimize the fallout from a sex video that reportedly had been sent from his cell phone.

It remains unknown who sent the X-rated video or who were its recipients.

Indianapolis Business Journal, citing anonymous sources close the the Republican caucus, reported that the video in question showed McMillin in sexual contact.

On Wednesday, the now-former lawmaker took to Facebook, posting a lengthy message vaguely addressing the sex scandal.

'I make mistakes. When I do, regardless of how big or small they are, I do my best to admit them, own up to it, and then start doing my best to remedy them,' McMillin wrote.

'That's what I am doing right now with my family. With that being said I will never understand the need for some people to spew hatred. I hope it makes those people feel better about themselves because there is no other discernable [sic] benefit.'

McMillin, who was widely considered a rising star in Indiana's GOP, had been at the legislature since 2010. He was named majority leader in November last year.

In response to his resignation, Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma, a Republican from Indianapolis, issued a statement thanking McMillin for his service and expressing support 'for his decision to step down in order to focus on his family'.

Bosma said Republicans will soon meet to select a new majority leader.

McMillin, whose youngest child with his wife Natasha was born in July this year, put out a statement via email Tuesday saying he had 'decided the time is right for me to pass the torch and spend more time with my family'.

He added: 'Now I want to focus all my attention on making my family's world a better place.'

Based on social media postings, McMillin and his wife have been together for many years but tied the knot only in January 2013.

This is not the first time that McMillin has found himself embroiled in a sex scandal that cost him his job.

Past foibles: McMillin resigned as an assistant prosecutor in Montgomery County, Ohio,  in 2005 after he had a romantic relationship with a victim in a domestic violence case he was prosecuting

Back in 2005, he resigned as an assistant prosecutor in Montgomery County, Ohio, after he had a romantic relationship with a victim in a domestic violence case he was prosecuting.

McMillin insisted at the time that the affair began after he removed himself from the case.

But his lover said in an affidavit that while she and McMillin were seeing each other, the prosecutor was pressuring her to press charges against the man who abused her.
