Why ARE so many stars going for the Mrs Slocombe look? Pixie Lott, Caroline Flack and Sheridan Smith among celebs opting for purple rinse made famous by Seventies TV comedy icon

It is a hair colour once the preserve of elderly ladies and Seventies sitcom characters. But now the purple rinse – as sported by Mrs Slocombe in Are You Being Served? – is making a comeback.

What started as a teen craze for pastel hair dye in unusual shades has been taken up by increasing numbers of celebrities.

The trend has seen Superdrug’s sales of home tinting products rocket 20-fold in a year. X Factor co-host Caroline Flack, 35, became the latest to show off the look, turning up at the Pride Of Britain Awards with her hair coloured a silvery-lilac shade.

She posted a picture of it on Instagram captioned: ‘Might have purple hair.’

Model Georgia May Jagger, 23, has had streaks of pink, purple and blue on her blonde locks, while Pixie Lott, 24, tinted hers bubblegum pink and Charlotte Church, 29, has gone from brunette to pinky-blonde.

Last year actress Sheridan Smith, 34, showed off a stunning violet crop at the Baftas.

Just last month 23-year-old supermodel Cara Delevingne dyed her hair a pink and matched it with a headscarf as she watched her rock star girlfriend St Vincent perform on stage.

Simon Comins, Superdrug’s buying director, said: ‘This is definitely a movement which is being driven by teenagers. For once it’s famous people copying teens, rather than the other way around.’

‘Three years ago the only pastel hair dyes sold on high street beauty shelves would be the lilacs and blues designed to add a coloured tinge to naturally grey hair - now however pastel and coloured hair dyes are officially the hottest beauty products selling twenty times more than last year.’

He added that the bestselling pastel hair dyes are the ones which can be washed out after the weekend in time for school or work on Monday.
