'It hasn't been easy': Kate Winslet admits she 'didn't plan on' having two failed marriages as she speaks candidly about relationships, motherhood and body image

Her cards have been kept close to her chest on her two failed marriages to Sam Mendes and Jim Threapleton.

And while Kate Winslet speaks out this month to say she plans to keep it that way, the Hollywood moviestar has confessed that her relationship rollercoaster 'hasn't been easy.'

Gracing the cover of WSJ. Magazine with a new and exquisite cover shoot in her 40th birthday month, Kate - who is now happily in her third marriage to Ned Rocknroll - takes time to reflect candidly on her relationships and on motherhood.

Having played out one divorce in 2001 after three years with Jim and one in 2010 after seven with director Sam, Kate now reveals: 'I know lots of people who are not in the public eye who have gone through several marriages I really do.

'And it's just those are the cards that life dealt me. I didn't plan on its being that way . And f*** me, it hasn't been easy, you know.'

Her marriage to Ned came along in 2012 and they now have a son Bear together, and he acts as a step father to her two others Mia (by father Jim) and Joe (by father Sam).

Style it up with a leggy Stella McCartney dress like Kate

With party season on the horizon, it's about time you started shopping for your new black tie worthy frock.

And if you're lacking in inspiration then why not just upgrade your little black dress? The LBD is classic, versatile and will never let you down. It will come to the rescue time and time again when you're stuck deciding what to wear, so there's every reason to invest in a good one.

Like this beautiful Stella McCartney number for example. This strapless cocktail dress with its sweetheart bandeau neckline and asymmetric cut is just the end in sophistication. It's Audrey Hepburn-esque and we've fallen hard for its charms.

If you're feeling similarly amorous then why not click (right) to buy it now at Net-a-Porter? It's expensive but oh won't it be worth it. Wear with simple high heel sandals and throw on a leather biker to add edge and you'll be turning heads 'til Christmas.

'No one really knows what has happened in my life,' she adds. 'No one really knows why my first marriage didn't last; no one knows why my second didn't. And I'm proud of those silences.'

These days, Kate sings Ned's praises, exclaiming: 'Thank God for Ned—really. He's just so incredibly supportive, and he's so much fun. He's absolutely everything to me. And to all of us.'

The October issue celebrates the Titanic actress to celebrate reaching her milestone 40th birthday the same month.

And while body image has conversely always been a vocal topic for Kate, she now says that she is focussed on staying fit and healthy because she is a mother, first and foremost.

She continued: 'We all focus on our bodies in our late teens and our early 20s, in a way that is just not cool or healthy.

'In your 30s, you become aware of staying fit. Now I view my physical self as an instrument that I have to keep going because I'm a mother, and I have to be as healthy as I can for those three people who need me—more than I need for myself to be in a f***ing nude scene.'

Kate is just about to make her return to the big screen with a role in forthcoming film Steve Jobs; another biopic about the Apple co-founder.

In it, Winslet portrays Joanna Hoffman, one of the original members of both the Macintosh team who initially stood up to Jobs.

It's sure to be another hit, but despite Kate's impressive back catalogue of films - from Iris to The Reader - the star says she still refuses to be called a 'movie star'.

'I've always been so uncomfortable with that,' she explains. 'I just don't feel like one, and I don't live like one either— not the way I imagine a proper movie star living.'

In the new interview the star went on to explain that she keeps her prestigious Oscar - achieved for her part in The Reader - in the bathroom so that she can catch people out for roleplaying with it between flushes.

The spotlight still hasn't become any easy to cope with, she adds, telling the magazine: 'No one teaches you, and also no one particularly helps you.

'It's a very specific thing to ask people to understand. "So-and-so was mean about me in the newspaper." "Oh, just ignore it." But you can't, because it's not true.'
