Jennifer Garner turns to a classic black dress for Chanel dinner as fashion fans Selma Blair and Jenna Dewan plump for structured blazers

Mums don't come much more stylish than actress Jennifer Garner.

The moviestar lead the way for her fashionable contemporaries Selma Blair and Jenna Dewan in a classic black dress at Tuesday night's Baby2Baby dinner, while they plumped for blazers.

Jennifer, mother to Ben Affleck's three children Seraphine, Violet and Samuel, looked lithe in her simple, sleeveless number as she made a glamorous arrival at the Chanel boutique in Los Angeles.

Keep it simple in a shift dress this season

When you're at a dinner hosted by Chanel you wear Chanel. Okay? That's just the rule.

So of course Rachel Bilson, Jenna Dewan and Selma Blair all rocked the luxury label last night in Los Angeles, as did Jennifer Garner who looked elegant in a simple shift dress from the brand.

The little black dress has legendary status for very good reason. It's versatile, always in style and can be relied upon to save us from those 'what shall I wear?' dilemmas that plague us at the last minute.

And where better to go for such a piece? It was Coco Chanel's midi length straight dress in 1926 that coined the phrase after all. Jennifer's version is a classic cut that skims the body with just minimal embellishment and a satin trim at the hem. Chic and demure and we love it.

She teamed the knee-length number with satin ankle strap heels, simple accessories and a clam-shaped clutch.

Chaneling a vintage Hollywood image, the brunette wore her shoulder-length tresses in voluminous waves and parted the style on one side.

Meanwhile, 43-year-old Selma opted for a more youthful image and showed off her slender legs in a Chanel shorts suit, complete with bold matching blazer.

From her elbow, the mum-of-one swung a bright red quilted handbag by the iconic French fashion house, too.

Channing Tatum's wife Jenna decided to keep things more casual on the night, needing nothing more than a well-fitting pair of jeans to showcase her enviable shape.

To the look, Jenna added black ankle boots and a tweed blazer by the brand; in much the same style as fellow actress - and new mum - Rachel Bilson; whose dress was made of the same retro threads.

Ellen Pompeo, Rosetta Millington and Balthazar Getty were also among the stars to attend the special charity event.

The charity, based in Los Angeles, helps to provide low-income children under the age of 12 with the basic necessities like diapers and clothing to help them begin a full life.

Chanel is just one of the fashion brands that support the foundation and helps to host the annual Baby2Baby gala; regularly attended by a-list mothers to the likes of Jessica Alba and Drew Barrymore.
