Sunrise lose ratings war with breakfast show rival Today... despite winning exclusive interview with Justin Bieber

It was supposed to be a ratings winner, but extensive coverage of Justin Bieber’s intimate Sydney gig was not enough to push Sunrise viewing figures above breakfast time rival Today.

Host David Koch and Samantha Armytage reported live from the coastal city’s Cockatoo Island on Wednesday morning as Bieber entertained a select group of predominantly female fans.

With unique access to the Canadian star, Seven Network show Sunrise were expected to trump their Channel Nine rival – but narrowly lost out by a 33,000 viewer margin.

The breakfast daily pulled in 306,000 for their coverage of the live event – which included an awkward, occasionally stilted interview with Bieber conducted by Koch and Armytage.

At one point 39-year-old Sam looked to be fishing for a compliment - which she didn't receive - when she remarked: 'I'm not technically your demo[graphic], I'm a little bit older than that'.

The pair even took an on-air selfie with the hit-maker, but Koch's hands appeared to shake uncontrollably as he fumbled with the camera.

'Kochie your hand's shaking,' Sam cried after they finally got a shot, to which the 59-year-old said in his defence: 'I was nervous!'
