What would Prince Philip say? Matt Smith listens to his iPod as he gets preened and pampered on the set of royal drama The Crown

He's playing a young Prince Philip in new royal drama, The Crown.

But costume-clad Matt Smith seemed a little out of place on the London set of the upcoming Netflix series as he listened to music on his iPod, looking a far cry from the Duke of Edinburgh as he bobbed along to his headphones.

The 32-year-old star's anachronistic appearance came as he was being pampered by a member of the hair and make-up team on Thursday morning.

Matt patiently waited during his makeover, tapping his toe in time to the music as his floppy quiff was parted along one side and slicked back with gel.

The former Doctor Who favourite was looking rather dapper in military garb and Aviator shades, with a black tie completing the look.

He looked a far cry from his TARDIS days during the shoot, which involved him filming scenes with a vintage car.

Matt - who is dating Cinderella star Lily James - is playing the royal Patriarch opposite Claire Foy, 31, who is taking on the role of a Queen Elizabeth II.

All the stops have been pulled out to ensure the Netflix Originals series, spanning 60 episodes across six seasons, is a success.

A reported $100million is being ploughed into the show, which will trace the life of the Queen Elizabeth II from her wedding in 1947 to the present day.

According to The Telegraph, The Crown will be the most expensive drama ever made by the US streaming company and its first to be made in the UK.

Billed as the 'the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street,' the drama promises a look at the intrigue, love lives and machinations behind the most notable events.

The tagline for the show has a blockbuster ring to it, which promises plenty of excitement, reading: 'Two houses, two courts, one Crown.'

So far starring alongside Matt and Claire, the most notable name to surface on the carefully guarded cast list is John Lithgow - who will play Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
